I still have a way to go on exploring the Neurosis discog, but this might end up being my favorite in the long run (assuming I ever actually get around to them all)

You definitely should imo! Whole discog is beyond solid. Their run from Souls ---> GTTR is basically untouchable

If I was ever gonna introduce a friend to Neurosis I'd pick this one, definitely their most accessible.

Souls would be a good rec for a newcomer too.

^ yeah that’s the way I would go, this then Souls... interesting that some of you guys found this tougher than TSIB, I personally see that as a little surprising. I suppose it depends what you’re initially drawn to when it comes to their music. They scratch many itches across their discog. Enemy is the one I ‘struggle’ with the most (from their great era), also found GttR relatively hard going to begin with.

‘The Word As Law is essential’ (2). The re-recording was a welcome additional as the original production held it back somewhat. I actually consider it part of their great run, Pain is Mind also has it’s merits.

"is this the go to style for the subsequent albums?"

yeah as noted that's not the way they went at all, given to the rising is them going far back to their late 90s sound but with a more modern take. the albums after that are more or less following the same path but with a lighter tone

The closers are close for me, but astns and this are about as far apart as a 4.5 and a 5 can be. Don't get me wrong I love this album but the whole album on astns is just banger after goddamn banger start to finish. Top 10 album all time for me
