Still Life or My Arms, Your Hearse

I'd say try Watershed. It's pretty awesome.
|

Maybe Watershed...
I think Ghost Reveries was much more straight forward than any of Opeth's previous efforts, so idk.
Maybe Damnation if you like their progressive rock side.

Yeah, I've never heard anyone, this site or elsewhere, complain that Opeth performed poorly, or even averagely in concert.

Good job. Now go DL their entire discography, worship them as goods, and proclaim that this is the greatest album ever created by man and you're set ;)

^^ Yes you can. Im on the cusp of Casual/ Love. I dont feel I can love them yet because I dont have their entire catalog put to memory. Id say Im about 75% there so far. Its hard, Opeth's music takes alot to digest (and I dont mean that in a bad way). A labor of love, if you will.

^^ Not calling it a chore, just determined. Like trying to digest Dream Theater's catalog took a long time but it paid off. Opeth's will too. I agree with you on Still Life, but my choice on which is better differs every day.

Still Life is their best imo. I still don't think this album is all that great. Too many parts are either boring, disjointed, or both.

I SOOOO agree with the Lopez comment. Axe is ok, but his meat-and-potatoes style doesnt even compare to the technicality and precision Lopez brought. Imagine how Lopez would have sounded on Watershed.

Thats what I mean. In other words, Lopez had a better understanding of space and when to add certain percussion elements. Like, imagine if Lopez got his hands on the middle, funky-prog section of "The Lotus Eater". Ohh well, Im going to see Opeth for the second time come May so Ill get a better opinion of Axe. He was great when I saw em in September, but hopefully theyll do a different set-list this time. Im praying for Godhead's Lament.
