I mean I wasn't saying "fuck Howl" I was saying "fuck Allen Ginsburg"

For a literary major you sure read into things incorrectly.

If someone riddles their art with the exact same language used by genuinely homophobic and sexist people that really isn't such an enormous leap to make

He's making fun of the homophobes.

The problem with satire I guess is that a lot of people mistake it for the opposite.

Are you saying white people have the exact same freedom to use the N word as black people?

Well, in the context of this album at least, his satire isn't sophisticated in the slightest. I'll check that link though, I would like an example of Zappa's words actually matching the quality of his music

"Are you saying white people have the exact same freedom to use the N word as black people?"

Freedom wise? Yes, but culturally many people consider this a faux pas.

But when it comes to being able to say it: of course they have the freedom.

Do you wanna pass a slur law? How would you police it Poly?

A slur law is a ridiculous idea. I'm not for legally enforcing this shit. I'm for white people opting to not using a word with enormous baggage for PoC, when they have made it abundantly clear it isn't for whites to use. You shouldn't need a law not to be an asshole. You should think about the consequences of your words, and choose them appropriately. Chucking "muh free speech" onto the end of an insensitive rant is ad hoc and a cop out.

I don't like saying that word or ever say it even, but honestly I'm also not the kind of guy to complain if another white guy says it. It's honestly not my place to police anyone's speech.

Wow okay, those lyrics were great. There was a level of sophistication there that I haven't seen from him. Surely that's a better match for his music, than slurs and fart jokes? Surely that broadcasts his views and values far more effectively?

People are too sensitive to the words themselves, but remember the important cliche:

"It's not what you say, it's how you say it."

But they are only said because of their social stigma and attached meaning (like duh)?

See the thing, I believe that it's great that he does both. Some of criticisms are super serious and righteous like Trouble Every Day and others are silly as fuck and show he knows how to be light about it like Bobby Brown Goes Down.

Both sides of Zappa (well he has other sides too but yeah) are great and bring up different points to his audience in different ways.

Check Freak Out! and We're Only in It for the Money, I think you'll love them.

"I rarely use cuss words in general, let alone slurs like fag or nigger because I just don't think they're in good taste and I feel a bit dirty whenever I say them"

Right, the only difference between you and me is that I think they're in poor taste when a musician uses them. I've just been shown Zappa can talk about these things in a profound way, so it is doubly frustrating that he talks about these things so crudely on this album. If you want your music to be R-rated and to piss off conservatives, then talk about sex in exquisite detail. That'll do the trick.

"See the thing, I believe that it's great that he does both"

I can't see the infantile half of his persona ever not getting on my nerves but we'll see won't we, thx for the recs

Calling somebody who uses lots of homophobic and sexist slurs a sexist homophobe = more damaging than white people continuing to use a racial slur with a violent history? That's an argument you'd struggle to make but w/ev

zappa's satire has annoyed me at times but not for its offensive nature, i just find a lot of his stuff unfunny. but a lot of it is funny. but like i said im here for the music and the jams
