I hate to say it but I agree with titan, the first time I listened fear of the dark I wasn't sure if I was listening to maiden or motley crue.

I mean, Maiden was really lost musically in the 90's as much as many heavy metal bands of the 80's, they couldn't decide which path to take to survive the whole grunge movement, and so they started to try different genres as a desperate move to keep themselves relevant. I think that Adrian's decision to return to Maiden's long "epic songs" of the 80's in the X factor was a step in the right direction, but there was no Bruce and the songwriting was weak in comparison to powerslave or seventh son.
