@evilford: Fully agree with your taken on originality and development. There is nothing bette rthen bands discovering and coinquering new ground and developing a new or different sound/atmosphere/aesthetics..
Dancing JR: There is nothing wrong with having a proven and tested formula, but yeah it tends to make things less exciting for me. Crowbar that you mentioned are actually a prime example. I fully believe that they have never made a bad album (even though I din't check all of their latest suff) but in earlier times they made mindwreckingly intense, groovy, heavy, melancholic stuff. Broken Glass is a 5 in my book. But with the latest albums I would see absolutely zero reason to spin them instead of one of their classics. They absolutely are a legacy band. Incantation is one of so many similar examples.
Still I enjoy this a lot, and wondering why that crowbar/Incantation feeling is not what I get from this.
I guess it has to do with what Hawks mentioned about a) their niche just being so special and high level and with the freshness and intensity that the atmosphere still has.
So I don't agree with this being dialled in (stylistically yes, but not in execution)...

Well said. M////

i just think they settled into a very consistent formula after majesty and I’m not a huge a fan of said formula, so I haven’t really connected with any of the post-majesty releases.

7. Acts of God
8. Failures for Gods

Descent is a bit lower than I thought after jamming their whole discog again, but that really just speaks more to how absolutely perfect this band is

Here in After is my top one too, although Close to a World Below is right there with it.
Also Vigna plays like a madman live. He was doing all these weird strums way up on his guitar neck. Twas sick as fuck.

I actually only know 6 Immo albums well enough to rank them:
1. Unholy Cult
2. Close To A World Below
3. Here in After
4. Acts of God
5. Descent
6. Failures for God
I think 1 to 3 as well as 5 and 6 are quite interchangeable though. So it's kinda 3 tiers for me

Dawn of Possession was probably fun to listen to 20-25 years ago. But honestly I just have a hard time with the production and vocals. I respect the raw grittiness but it’s just not that fun to listen to imo

Dawn is really good, but tbh there are other death metal albums in that style from that very year that are better. It's still great, but Immolation is one of the very best the genre has to offer, it's just an unfair discography.
Speaking of which, Shadows in the Light is moving up a spot or two - jamming it again now and holy shit, this thing riffs

Yeah that’s always been the most underrated immo album……..imo
Sorry guys I love and respect DOP but just not something I can get into much these days now that they have 5+ albums with far better prod, plus Ross has improved so much
