Anti hype train is good to keep expectations in check. However, I am loving every second of this release. Even if I eventually bump it down (which happens with every Deftones release for me) I can´t see this anywhere below a 4.
Again, last four songs are killer. "Infinite Source" and "Souvenir" are pretty amazing as well. I do agree with the overall sentiment "Locked Club" is the only subpar song here.

Singles were definitely the best songs. This band is so frustrating.

Recent Deftones releases have been weird for me. Growing up they were one of my top five bands. Still one of my favorites of all time. But ever since KNY I've felt like I need a year to know if I actually dig the album. My first reaction to OHMS was "this feels like a return to form", but I haven't listened to it front to back in like... three years? This one also feels really energetic. It feels like it's better than OHMS. But will I still feel that way in a year?

Koi No Yokan is my second favorite Deftones album. If this is the same brand of shoegazy, atmospheric awesomeness I'm in for a treat.

They definitely lost a lot of steam and creative juice after KNY
It feels like they almost became a deftones copycat band after that, like they're trying to write deftones songs rather than just writing songs that define their sound, even the experimentation feels forced but maybe I'm being too harsh
It's not bad output for a band 20+ years into their career it's just not music that I feel like listening to very often. If I'm in the mood for them I'll just go with something from ATF-KNY

Not sure if I'd rank this a 4 or 4.5 yet, have to give it a few more spins. I do feel it's a consistent listen overall, although not quite reaching the HIGHS of Diamond and Koi. But Chino sounds more clear and focused to me here than on Ohms, that had a handful of songs where his vocals were rough and pitchy IMO. Favorites right now are ecdysis, i think about you all the time, milk of the madonna, cut hands and departing the body.

Locked Club is a vibe tbh, I can see it being the weaker one but it’s cool

This album has absolutely nothing on their Adrenaline to Self titled strech. Even Diamond Eyes and Koi beats this new one, but Deftones fans on sputnik will never not give their latest album a 5 lmao.

I think adrenaline beats this new one by pure energy alone. All these mid tempo songs here, only make me miss their aggressive side a lot more. The "aggressive" songs here like Cut, cYz, infinte are nothing compared to songs like Root or Engine nr 9.

You mean to tell me they were more energetic in their 20's than their 50's? Huh, no kidding

White Pony - Song titles with capital front letter = better atmosphere than this.

All of them are on their A game here; Chino is a fucking gangster on this album. I thought he sounded powerful on Ohms, but he sounds as great as he did on KNY and Diamond Eyes on these tunes. (Which I feel was his best period for vocals)
