Feather my boy that is a WILD take.

Odal: okay in fairness, CBTS exists, so maybe not "by a decent bit", but if we ignore that album then i stand by my statement

I don't think Vaxis II is better than one and it has settled at the bottom of their discography (other than CBTS) for me, but I can see why someone would think it.

Vaxis I is an awesome time and I adore it, but it is a pretty back-to-basics listen that has a fair amount of bloat in its runtime.

Vaxis II felt more like the band were moving forward in a direction, even if that direction was the furthest they've strayed from the original formula of Iron Maiden-tinged guitar heroics. I adore "Bad Man" for being the loud and stupid good time that it is, and the title track is legit one of the best they've ever done. But I think a lot of the electronic elements are half-baked and the guitars are pretty undercooked. Travis hardly feels like he is there at all. My main take away from the album (outside of the stellar finale) was that it seemed like the band wasn't content with just rehashing the Vaxis I formula and were at least still trying new things, even if they didn't totally land.

Vaxis I is the superior album for me, and I would've bought in if the Vaxis Saga turned out to be that five times, but I don't think we get Vaxis III without II -and Vaxis III is a level I didn't think they were still capable of.

The Dark Sentencer is an absolutely incredible song, the rest of V1 just didnt land for me. I have slogged through it many times and it just doesnt click. Odal pointed out a few reasons why, I think the bloat just kills it for me, no momentum, no interesting highlights, just nothing really beyond the opener. V2 admittedly has little guitar highlights, but it sounds like a band actually trying something new after being bland as all hell for a couple albums. I realize I am the odd one out with these takes though.

I am excited to listen through this more.

Searching Tomorrow is the chorus I keep finding lodged in my skull

UP TO NO GOOD

The worst part of V1 is definitely that it drags in many places and several songs have no clue how to end, but the peaks on that album are pretty fuckin peak.

It's still an album I can do top to bottom and enjoy just skipping the last track. Something like TCBTS I'm pretty much only listening to Atlas, The Island, or From Here to Mars and everything else is a hard skip.

YOTBR I hate a fuckin lot I don't think there's any tracks on there I even really care to go back to but maybe Juggernaut.

Funnily enough, I think Here to mars is the worst song they've done by a healthy margin purely because it rips off Juggernaut so much lol

V1 doesn't have any songs that I skip, but I do think they could've found a way to shave 40 seconds to a minute off of most of those songs. A good deal are just a chorus too long without adding anything new. The Gutter thru Old Flames is an impeccable run. But, like I said, still adore the album and can do an entire listen just fine

I'm not even sure that The Dark Sentencer is the best song on that album tho. it's great but i'm more drawn to tracks like It Walks Among Us, Unheavenly Creatures, Queen of the Dark, Gutter, The Pavilion.

YOTBR gave us Far (easily one of their best songs imo), Juggernaut, and World of Lines, which are also great. The rest of the album is pretty mid though and there are some downright hilariously shit songs, like the closer

@Gyro V1 is so bland that I don’t remember most of it, but I recall Queen of the dark being particularly slow and grating

Alright I’m done whining about V1, this album is soooo good. Really digging the continued variety with so many nods to past works and rejuvenated “old” style

I've been listening to this since it dropped Thursday night.

Typical Coheed release that took a few listens to really get its hooks in, but man this is their strongest album in a minute.

I'm in the "Vaxis I is too long" club, so much fat on that one.

Vaxis II was something quite refreshing in that it wasn't the cookie cutter Coheed template of having a long "epic" song to open the record etc. Songwriting was focussed.

However, the auto tune was ridiculous- I get that Claudio wanted to use it for artistic effect, it's all over his side project's latest release too, but it really didn't suit Coheed's sound.

Too many missteps in a row and no real flow to it. I adore Rise, Naianasha though.

This one takes me back to the earlier stuff in that it's a bit of an onion, layers revealing themselves with each listen.

Vinyl arrived today so switched up the format and I'm digging it even more.

Continuum all on one side is awesome. The Omni-Voice on Side D is 22 minutes of ambient fizzing and warping, some strange stuff going on there.

Standouts: Continuum I-III, Play The Poet, Goodbye Sunshine and I'm a sucker for a good Coheed intro. Hearing The Ring In Return bleed into The Hollow does things to my brain.

yeah Dark Sentencer isn't even in my top 5 on that album tbh. good opener but in the scheme of their longer tracks it's towards the bottom I'd say

The Gutter is still the best song from the whole Vaxis era and it isn't close

Gutter goes on for a chorus too long imo. I did get goosebumps the first time I heard it though.

Dark Sentencer was like a recycled Domino, I never like the "hey"s during the intro and verses.

Listened to this at the gym yesterday I havent listened to Coheed in a decade or so and really enjoy it. Parts of it really sounded like My Chemical Romance to me.

V3 > V1 > V2

Though I will admit I haven't listened to V2 since the week it came out.

Vaxis I was like, "guys, I promise we can still write a Coheed record" but it was self-produced, and it's really obvious no one was in the room with them to help trim the fat. So many songs are in that 4.5-5.5 minute length, and very few of them earn that.

I like Vaxis II a lot, because it sounds re-energized, but I do think it's a product of Claudio cooking by himself during COVID, and then it being him and Zakk mostly working on stuff, and not a lot of time with all 4 band members hashing things out together.

This album sounds like Zakk and Claudio both finding their footing working with each other for a second time, and whether it's perceived or real, the other members seem to be highlighted (mostly Travis) more than in Vaxis II.

Just discovered that at 3:00 into The Flood, the intro riff for Delirium Trigger starts playing. Holy shit.
