ADTOE is the best Mangini-era collection of songs (2) It has a lot of heart and soul in its compositions I think compared to what came after
I cannot stand DOT's production

Not sure if it's Spotify/Youtube/Apple Music, but I really don't like the mix on this. Feels very wet and lossy.
I thought a lot of this was mostly just the usual, but the standout moments (Dead Asleep, that little rock n roll break in A Broken Man, Bend the Clock) are very good indeed.

A remaster will not fix ADToE, it will need a full remix. But I don't mind the production there that much.

I can definitely get behind ADTOE being the best Mangini album. Just an unpretentious and fun and occasionally genuinely emotional album

I love a fair bunch of songs off ADToE, so I get that. However, there are also a few songs I don't care about, like On The Backs of Angels, Outcry, Far From Heaven, This is the Life and Break Me Down, Build Me Up
So yea, really mixed bag for me

they went 6/6 on black clouds imo
this album i'm not quite sure dead asleep is very good, not sure morpheus really warrants its existence, and are we dreaming being its own track irrationally bothers me. do think its a bit better than the sum of its parts tho

A Nightmare To Remember is a perfectly crafted song (yes, even with Portnoy's harsh vocals)

ANTR and Best of Times are both 10’s but I don’t think the rest of the album matches up as much

This band is no stranger to referencing themselves in their music but it really bothers me how similar the main themes of Shadow Man Incident and AVFTTOTW t/t are lol, comparing 2:08 of Shadow Man and 0:31 of the View t/t

I’m surprised people like the production on this, it’s kind of muddy and kind of thin at the same time with a lot of presence on the guitars, like a darker sounding And Justice for All. Gives me ear fatigue. That said it’s nice seeing these guys obviously having fun late in their career with Portnoy back in the fold. A successful DT album really needs to just deliver 2-3 great tracks to match their average quality and this album meets that standard, with A Broken Man and the Shadow Man Incident. The previous album had some tracks that were better than the rest of the album though, so to me there’s not this big demarcation in quality with the return of Portnoy. There is a style shift though obviously, more metal, more relaxed and more freely written. This one suffers from a lack of dynamic range though. I’m long past being bothered by Labrie but he’s not well suited to carrying such a homogenous, metal oriented set of songs. On the other hand it’s nice that they reined in Rudess’s worst impulses. Overall enjoyed it.

I'm not willing to listen because I've listened to this band enough to know that if I ever turn them on again I'll walk directly into oncoming traffic.
