Man prog bands like Opeth do almost nothing for me with a few rare exceptions like porcupine tree/SW
I can find their songwriting and musicianship impressive but once that novelty wears off it tends to feel hollow in the same sense that a Nolan film can be technically impressive and entertaining enough but not really stir up much emotion.

I prefer Mer prog, agreed

I first listened to Blackwater Park in 2008 and it blew me away. I eagerly awaited the release of Watershed, and I loved it. This new one is probably going to be either a 3 or a 3.5 for me, and I think the reason is mainly that I'm just older and less impressionable.

I love Opeth, it's one of my favorite bands ever, has been for 15 years now. This album, however, does nothing for me.

The tone of this one is so Opeth. Also production is great.
To me, this one is very much contains the good stuff they've been working on during the post-Watershed era. Which means it's very addictive and twisty-turny in a loooovely way.
And energetic, alive!

Absolutely! And just like on ICV they sound like they're enjoying themselves as well.

For some reason a lot of '24 albums are joyful. Maybe it's that ol' post-pandemic resilience.

oh, maybe that's why I like so little that's on offer? Joy can be a real drag sometimes
I'm still having mixed feelings about this. I should perhaps circle back around after another dose of ICV (which I do remember liking but haven't heard in aaaaaaaaages)

I get that for a lot of other tech/prog bands, but Opeth?

Good review Rob. Quick editorial comment; the silcrow symbol (§) stands for section not paragraph. Paragraph would be ¶.

The band themselves have been making that mistake, referring to the song titles as paragraphs but using the silcrow.

That’s pretty funny

Hehe, it is! Should be 'sections' then.
Might be a lost-in-translation thing too, since Wikipedia says:
"In other languages it may be called the "paragraph symbol" (for example, German: Paragrafzeichen)."
Seems to be the case in Swedish as well: Paragraftecken. And in Dutch: Paragraafsymbool. And in French: Paragraphe (symbole). Portuguese: Parágrafo (símbolo). Spanish: Párrafo (signo ortográfico).
Conclusion of this small study of European languages: English is weird.
Also Wikipedia: "The section sign is often used when referring to a specific section of a legal code. (...) The section sign is frequently used along with the pilcrow (or paragraph sign), ¶, to reference a specific paragraph within a section of a document. While § is usually read in spoken English as the word "section", many other languages use the word "paragraph" exclusively to refer to a section of a document (especially of legal text), and use other words to describe a paragraph in the English sense. Consequently, in those cases "§" may be read as "paragraph", and may occasionally also be described as a "paragraph sign", but this is a description of its usage, not a formal name."
