Damnation was a grower in the context of Opeth’s discog for sure

I’d never revisit it now because there are things in a a similar realm I’d rather listen to that made it less impactful (and kinda redundant tbh)

Yeah Damnation is their most solid and emotive prog rock album. Like Windowpane is gorgeous but yeah I used to love it more when I wasn’t as branched out.

I think a slight problem i have with this album is its essentially one big song.Which conceptually it works, but every track except the closer has almost no replay value outside the context of the album. I can listen to When, drapery, Ghost of perdition isolated and go "fuck yeah" but i dont think i can listen to any of the § tracks isolated

Damnation is amazing, has never grown off me over all these years, if anything the opposite. Other than that Heritage is my fav progpeth.

I sort of get the ICV comparisons for this one but also not as much cause that was still kind of retro sounding, and maintained lots of their beautiful acoustic and folksy side that this unfortunately barely has anywhere.

I basically agree with Mongi's comment on the previous page. Even if there are lots of cool moments, the songwriting is so slapdash and stop-start sounding to me that I can't fully get into any of the songs wholly until the wonderful closer, easily the best on here.

got 4 songs into this and bailed. couldn't stand it. every time i felt it was getting somewhere it'd just abandon momentum and start up with another nonsensical idea with no progression. it's all the bells and whistles of prog without the core fundamentals. i'm sorta floored this is the same band that wrote ghost reveries.

These are the 5 however you want to shake out the order, mine kind of changes based on mood, their first 2 being albums I wasn't as into when i got into them but I do like them a lot more now and just need to spend more time with them and they might find their way in that mix but those 5 are definitely the gold for me.

This is easily their best since GR. It's missing some big melodic hooky moments that albums like BWP and GR really excelled with but in exchange there's some really dense and interesting writing here, and it's so much more cohesive than anything I remember hearing post-Watershed.

squiglioid 4-6 are definitely the highlight for me. Already listened to this more than every album between Watershed and now.

Review is good but I gotta say all the hate for the last track is pretty baffling/asinine. It's a bit straightforward and chill compared to the rest of the record but I think that's what makes it work, and what makes squigly7 'just ending' work, it's not a bonus track it's the last track and the transition works great and it plays out the album on a really nice note. Maybe it will grow on you.

I think this is an interesting full-album experience, like sure it may seem like there's not a standalone song here but sometimes there doesn't need to be

A 3.9 Opeth record in 2024? No shit- will have to jam tomorrow. Are there any harsh vox or all clean?
