Yeah I basically agree with everything darknoctues said even though my ratings a bit higher

I kind of dig this so far. I liked Time I too.

i adore time i but there's so much more going on with it compositionally - time ii doesn't really have that same level of exciting composition. not to say the songs are badly written - they absolutely aren't, but they just aren't as exciting as 'sons of winter and stars' for example which is just a powerhouse from start to finish. it's so immaculately written.

I went back and listened to the debut and man... might have to drop this down. Debut just absolutely mops the goddamn floor with this. I think maybe he blew his wad with the self titled and everything else has been him trying to top it by just being overly grandiose
|
| |
everything else is him trying to grift money off an album lots of people liked so of course it’s gonna be inferior.

This sounds like Wintersun taking a Fleshgod Apocalypse approach to be as extra as possible.

i think as well he hinted at the styles of time ii in the forest seasons (autumn with storm and winter with silver leaves)
but both the forest seasons songs are honestly better which is another reason this was crippled on arrival lol

Settling on a 3.5 for this now. I want to like it more, but it’s just not there, and for every additional virtue I uncover, I notice more frustrating flaws. The production and mixing do it absolutely no favours, the orchestral/synth features are buried really weirdly behind everything else, especially the drums, and where they poke through they sound like dull stabs of vague string sections. The waste of potential really sucks. Maybe they’ll do a remaster in 10 years and I’ll like it better.

@Eakflanderyof it really extremely does, I actually kind of forgot how amazing the S/T is.
Starchild and Beautiful Death are basically perfect tracks one after the other, I don't think Sons of Winter tops those.

it's extremely close but i think sons of winter and stars is a little better. but back to front i'd say the s/t is the best thing wintersun ever did, and likely will ever do.

remember in like 2010 when he said he had like three more albums written and waiting to be recorded i wonder what happened to those
|
| |
he'll only release them if the next kickstarter hits 1 million

Man, this is wild. Finally got around to listening to this. Dude spends ages trying to get the perfect production then releases this cacophony of mud with the most overpowering drums I've heard in some time.
Highlights from this goofball's promotional material include:
- Jari Mäenpää: Vocals, Guitar, Computer
- 7 guitar solos by Jari
- Killer production! Best sounding Wintersun album to date!
- 100% guarantee to blow your mind!
This whole listen was in one ear out the other, not sure there are any memorable moments on this.

First impression: this sounds okay. If Jari wasn't a self-aggrandizing tool, I wouldn't think too much about the production.
Second impression: I'm getting ear fatigue about 5 minutes into Way of the Fire. This is so overstuffed.

Production didn't sound that bad through my loudspeaker. Still the production clearly isn't worth the trouble. Jari shouldn't have spent the time composing, it's bland as hell.
