It doesn’t help that I’ve been listening to a lot of Coroner which is cumdumped with sigma riffs

“But it’s creatively bankrupt in the sense either them or DsO have already played stuff like this for an accumulative seven hours throughout their discographies.”
I respect your opinion, but admittedly you’re kinda funning this up with a lack of conviction. People like you make my 3.5s looks bad. Go lower

“3.5 for musicianship and proficiency”
…although I’m of the belief that technical proficiency means close to jack shit

Correct, the belief.

Technical proficiency doesn’t mean anything if the music doesn’t sound good. It’s only a means of expanding ideas. By the way, this album sounds almost COMPLETELY different from Everything is Fire to Shrines of Paralysis. Do not see how Ulcerate is recycling old ideas at all. More like rejuvenating them into something new and rich. Though I’ve listened to this thing almost a dozen times now so different perspective I suppose

weird that this is the only review for this album....
I agree that overall it doesn't sound like anything pre Stare because of the overall atmosphere and sound and the fact that there are so many calm / atmospheric parts. But the guitar work IMO does sound more like early Ulc than the guitar work on Stare did. I am not yet sure what to make about this album. But I guess I will find out soon, as my vinyl just arrived. Stare did only fully sink in when listening to it on vinyl as the sound was so much better than on YT or spotify.

Enjoying the vibe, sound quality and musicality of this quite a bit. Album's probably a bit too long for its own good and that endless vox reverb remains as annoying as ever but other than that I can see myself scoring this on a par with EiF and Vermis.

I haven’t heard this yet, kinda want to wait for a physical copy. But I definitely have a hard time believing this warrants a 1.5-2.5 rating.

"I see a lot of people saying things along the lines of “I need to listen to this more” and “it hasn’t ‘clicked’ yet”. Is that really what music is about?"
Sometimes, but after an honest effort you can move on
