Also I do feel (and I don't really want a counter hissy fit about it) that you are slightly out of your wheelhouse on this genre and don't have a full idea just how influential and prolific some of those Tier 1 artists have been.
Oldham probably has 50 albums behind him, Kozelek and Callahan too - much of this has been released in the last 25 years. Molina isn't far behind, and Elliott Smith's influence is huge, almost the answer to 'name a big folk star from the '90s/00s'.
Gavin Clark was more just a sput nod, and Linkous is just someone who was huge for me when younger (nearly everything he released was excellent though).
PJ Harvey might have been about as prolific and influential? Newsom has four albums but she's still top ten for me.
I think you're just missing the point a bit.

I'm not massively into folk, but in the broader sense of 'solo projects' or those where a single person is the main player and thus anyone else is a 'performer' (i.e. usually these projects use the name of said person or a stage name of some kind) I'm actually struggling to name many male artists I truly care about.
Outside of Nick Cave, Jeff Buckley and a heap of jazz it's almost a fat nil poi (must be forgetting something here, but still). Anything pop, electronic, folk or indie orientated leans heavily towards women in general
seems that what I said before about relatability was actually an entirely theoretical argument with no basis in my own thoughts, either that or I have an inherent bias against solo male artists, lol(?)

>list of personal favourites to generate discussion not a definitive anything
>None of those artists you listed have had the impact of on me as the Tier 1 ones
>just how influential and prolific some of those Tier 1 artists have been
i am less sure than ever exactly what this list was supposed to represent

it was more just to encourage some healthy happy chat and keep the thread a 'rollin'
we can ignore it and move on
I know this isn't your genre or AOTY candidate but it is mine and a bit of over excitement is there as is there for your latest baby no doubt, the list maybe didn't require the surgeon's scalpel but I guess some ok debate.
I mean the fact the recent female folk song writer I championed got near uniformly dumped on once mentioned sort of sums up the 'no win' feel of this conversation for me but whatevs.

oh shit the bed, this is a Sufjan thread okay let's move o-
"I'm actually struggling to name many male artists I truly care about"
...or hold that thought. doof, you can have your thread back but only after we have helped demon overcome his internalised misandry this is now a full intervention

okay, thought of a couple more, but yeah
and that's a scary thought Doof!
to clarify I wasn't talking about any electronic projects that are mostly vocal-less or sample-based, because there's an absolute shit-ton of them (sometimes with alternative project names, but often produced in the main by one guy)

i mean... maybe if female singer/songwriters were better, there'd be more female representation on best of lists. It's just a fact that men are better

not if the female staff writers of sputnik music have anything to say about it, amirite
