alife is top tier Slowdive. Probably my favorite off the album.

most 3.5 album of all time probably
i listen to shanty a lot, the pacing and layering is very satisfying. as cheese at it may sound this does kind of sound like a neat and sonically refreshing take on shoegaze, and i think i am only capable of seeing it that way bc it is slowdive. i don’t like using the s word anymore

This is pleasant enough but nothing really grabs me after the first couple of listens

Shanty blew me away, but the rest is just nice/pleasant. Album is still at least a 3.5. Are the rest of their albums similar to this?

All their other records have a lot in common with this except Pygmalion (which is one of the best, but more of an ambient Bark Psychosis/Talk Talk fix). Self-titled, Morningrise and 5 EPs are all better than most of their LPs and v much required listening too

souvlaki and pygmalion are 5s. this and jfad are 3.5s. last one a 2.5. this doesn’t fully sound like any of them to me but it’s closest to jfad & the last album. i’d say there’s some pygmalion n souvlaki nods peppered throughout too. the slab feels like a weird combo of all of them and is still probably the best song here to me
eps are all good too, the 5 ep does not get enough love

shanty is good but the slab is the real gem here

i did a mega edit lol i needed to include what u just said bc iiiiii agree
it’s the only song where the fade-out makes total sense. they do that too much on this

The Slab was a pretty major anticlimax for me, starts momentous but doesn't go anywhere with it. Dunno if I'd even put it in the top half, leave that Disney drumshit to Sigur Ros

Lovemixtape with the based album ratings and less based appraisal of The Slab. Yeah, that one ain’t really hitting for me either rn

still can't decide exactly how i feel about this after various spins

Honestly, it’s fairly wholesome while you’re in the zone but has few standout moments. I might drop this from my rotation at some point but it certainly works for now.

i’m surprised you guys don’t like the slab that much! i love all of the layers. and i’ll say it again, to me it feels like a modern primal

i like the slab, it's got a kind of hypnotic groove
|
| |
Primal is all about the build and payoff, don't get that at all on the Slab

to me primal is all about ‘here is every possible modulative effect we know how to use, watch us use them all and see how well they work with our typically keen ear for melody’ but ya it obviously does build and that is an appeal of it. i think the slab is dynamic too it just insists very much upon its range. the synth swells r one of my fav things about the song
i’ll read that eventually
