literally the same broken gymnastics as "people listen to ben howard in japan?? well fuck, i bet they've all seen DISNEY MOVIES lolololol"

other than that you're implying there's a majority of people who listen to persona soundtracks outside of the game context, which is just silly and unfortunate

What about Boredoms

They’re prob the first Japanese rock band I’ve heard of, knew of them even in high school

I think she’s probably the most recognized Japanese artist is my point

if you recognise hatsune miku it just means you've taken the same wrong turn in a websearch as everyone else has made at some point (see Kikuo thread). she is also not an artist, which is why she's so ubiquitous - imagine if the same guitar settings used by every bedroom djent musician had a cute, visible literal face to them? you'd be convinced that shit had conquered the world

boredoms have the same level of devotional cult following in japan as anywhere else tbh, although ig they extra weirdo clout for anyone who likes og harsh noise and/or john zorn

As far as rock bands go, I'd probably say either B'z or X Japan. But yeah, Boredoms definitely has a U.S. following as well

Considering they've sold over 30 million records worldwide and received extensive coverage from mainstream rock/metal sites like Loudwire, I'm gonna say yes

x japan is definitely that big. one of my colleagues who had never said a word about music to me brought them up when i showed her a picture of heyday robert smith from a class i was prepping on UK heritage

was tempted just to go "p much the same but this man only sings sad songs about not having anyone to sleep with"

X japan has some bangers. kinda proper trad guitar music that does not sit well with mopey posers

think the band with the most disproportionately large international following despite minimal interest in catering to the market or touring overseas is Dir En Grey though. band got real lucky dropping some of their dumbest leanest material at a time when US mallcore was at an all-time high and never looked back ig

Kinda like Katatonia with Viva Emptiness, eh?
