“post-genre lmao come on now youre lost in the sauce”
It’s interesting how, when we really like something, we sometimes over-estimate it or the people who made it. Like, if we like it, it must be the most high of art or its makers genius or some underappreciated trailblazers. Not necessarily speaking of Venin, but it’s the same shit you see in YouTube comments all the time, splooging themselves withered over anything that hardens their nipples

Nah that's definitely accurate lmao.
I was misled into thinking i was gonna get some Life Changing Transcendental Experience with Lorna Shore's last album, but instead I got what I felt was a chaotic nightmare of tempo switched breakdowns that didn't keep the momentum of the cool symphonic elements I felt going, and not to mention the ear-piercing production. Not to say it didn't have moments, I feel like if "Soulless Existence" was the norm more than the outlier, structure wise, I would've enjoyed it more. It felt like it had more of a natural flow.
With Sleep Token, I guess I can see why someone would say I'm overreacting, but to me this feels almost about as avant-garde as one can get without sacrificing accessibility/hooks. It's like a level of genre fluidity I hadn't felt since getting into The Dillinger Escape Plan, although it's clear ST's origins are in pop and R&B.
What's weird to me is how I'll splooge over this but I don't like Poppy, although she kind of does the exact same thing. I've tried with Poppy's music and I just don't see it, and maybe that's the kind of reaction people have with ST meanwhile I hear the combo of sounds and it just gets me like aaahhhhh.

The TL;DR is I sort of get it but also this is exactly the type of thing that inspires me. it's got hooks and accessibility but it's also not just The Same 3 Minute 4 Chord Song Over And Over Again.

Idk man but if going to do it get creative with it. Have artistic flare, like calling someone a cum crusted crossiant who has relations with farm equipment. Really dig deep

"The avant-garde is pandering to high school music tastes with subpar songwriting in *3 different popular genres* !!"
idk about you but honestly I feel like i'd rather high schoolers jam something like this that's more on the eclectic side than the stuff that passed for "metal" on the radio when I was in high school - shout out to Five Finger Death Punch and their gross toxic-masculine pastiche. Ivan probably definitely agreed with Phil Labonte when he was hurling slurs at Andy Biersack and the Black Veil Brides.
It's also why I'm glad Avenged Sevenfold is taking this bizarro avant-garde approach even if I feel like it's gonna fly way over my head and just flat out sound like shit. at least they're doing something unique instead of washing away as Yet Another Metallica Cover Band like I feared they would with Hail to the King.
also it's important to note that youthful exuberance tends to resonate more with me personally anyway.

I mean it's most likely meant as a passive aggressive shot but I feel like this is the type of album I just wouldn't get when I was in high-school but then look back 7 years later and realize it was class. Was me with a lot of bands I love now quite frankly. Used to not get Dillinger, Converge, Underoath, Periphery, among others.
