Xen is a 4 chord song with a main riff that I could probably come up with after playing guitar for a week and discovering what a "drop x tuning" is.
The chugging in the verse is anxiety inducing.
The autotune is peaking hard on the chorus.
It's a half assed 4 bar track on a grid just like Echo Chamber and many others.
Echo Chamber is literally one riff/4 bar melody throughout the entire song. Why mention Echo Chamber? Because it's literally almost the same riff as in Xen.
The "synths" are only innovative if you're an American who still calls every electronic music genre with a beat "EDM, bitch", and has never opened a Serum-preset in his life.
The review here actually put it wonderfully; a product of industrialization. If it means when you lose all that's organic in your band, and move towards "one dude sitting on a gridlocked DAW for a couple months and calls it a Northlane album"-approach.

Simple music can be good.
I'll still take this over whatever boring copycat chugfests Northlane was doing during their early days alongside shitty Volumes, Born of Oshitis and other faux prog bands

Three tracks in and this is massive leaps forward compared to the dumpster fire their last record. Its pretty fun though, echo chamber is a bit of a bop

Okay i think ill settle on a 3 this isnt for me but its pretty fun. Could use some trimming though 13 tracks is too long.

til marcus in fact does not writing their melodies and its in fact jon i have beef w for all the boring nothing hooks across the last 4 albums
that would also explain why marcus's solo stuff is somehow kinda good

I wish Is This A Test? was either 2 minutes shorter or replaced by an ambient track like Sleepless or Weightless. Otherwise, a pretty good record overall. Better produced than Alien, though they're pretty similar in quality. I love this style of prog metalcore more than all the technical chugging seen in other bands in the genre.

Alien was great, the singles on this one are really mid. Is there anything on this at all reminiscent of Alien? Or is it all bland? I don’t know if I can be arsed listening to this

If you don’t like the singles I’d try Xen, Clarity, and Obsidian. If you don’t like those don’t bother with the full thing

Got it. Man that’s a shame, Alien showed a lot of personality. It had so many great tracks imo, this one is like they’re going backwards judging by the singles
