“ just not seeing it as a vapid album the way some do as it's clear that she is a student of the game and just loves pop music”

Well those points don’t really negate its potential for being vapid. Pop is often vapid after all. Putting heart into it doesn’t mean it is automatically going to be stimulating or challenging.

Is it challenging? I do think so. It's against the pop trends that are going on right now and I think for the most part the songs are pretty creative with some genuinely breathtaking moments.

Is it stimulating? Absolutely

I think all the songs have a modern precedent (Yuck vs, uh, What Lovers Do) but again, perhaps there’s room to debate showing up for the culture vs paycheck (or rather, only the paycheck).

@Odali I don’t think it’s against pop trends going on right now so much as late to the party of pop trends that have been going on for quite some time now

it was her MSN messenger handle when she was a teen lol

You can argue that she's slow and catching up on the trends -I would disagree since the cycles between happy and sad music topping the charts has quickened to where it changes every three or so years now- but either way it's against what is popular right now.

Lol oh. Thanks for the info.

Maybe the cycles have quickened to that point but if that’s true then it kind of renders going “against what is popular right now pretty arbitrary anyways and ruins the edge factor. And big part of what feels “late” about this to me is how much of it is either a love letter directly to the 80s (both stylistically and aesthetically) or a love letter to more modern electropop (which in turn is already a love letter to the 80’s lol), and that has been a pretty prominent feature of all kinds of music for pretty much the last entire decade, and came to a boiling point in pop as recently as 2020. Needless to say I don’t really agree that it’s going against the grain of… much of anything. And what I’ve appreciated about Charli in the past is that she is often early to the party, not late.

Tyler.
