Pretty much fell in love with this on first listen. Glad to have found this and can’t wait to spin it again and check out Sparklehorse as well.

Grandaddy are my 'band of the week' on my RYM blog/list - this album really stands out as by far their best

I’ll give it a read. Yeah this is their best - I honestly rank it as one of the best indie albums out there. Still feels underrated

First listen... The opener kind of outshined the rest but I generally liked this.

Ok so on a second (more focused) listen, I though this kinda sucked outside of a few songs. Curious where my feelings will settle.

Idk man, there are just a lot of goofy, amateurish, cheap-sounding electronics here and there's very little in the way of melody, guitars often just chug along on the same note (and often in pretty displeasing tones), vocals are kinda painful a decent amount of the time, lyrics are...ok, I guess. They're clearly trying to do a Thing here, but I feel like they kind of beat you over the head with that Thing without actually saying or doing that much of anything. I guess there are some neat ideas but something about it just feels kinda lazy to me. The opener is pretty great though, for what it's worth - it just kinda feels like they had that song and then built an album around it. I like Dial-a-View a decent amount as well.

Ramshackle charm? I think the idea is they’re supposed to sound like a home made robot malfunctioning - lo-fi bloop and bleep.

All I will say is I've been listening to the B-Side comps and there’s a default Grandaddy song - same sort of chords and melody, same bleating/whimpering vocal delivery. So there is an undesirable ‘Grandaddy sound’ they can drift towards.

Think they avoid it mostly here though.

‘Underneath the Weeping Willow’ is a consummate weepy

Yeah lo-fi bleep and bloop indeed, twinkly bliss; minimalist, atmosphere in buckets - Miner At The Dial-A-View for example ('good luck ;_;' into the closer; the two Jed the robot songs. Ah man that take hurts me.

I will say that in terms of lo-fi stuff in the same ballpark, Mark Linkous had a touch of genius that these guys never came close to

The thing is they don’t really need that, their style has its charm despite a certain workmanlike approach at times

That is just a two-listen take mind, I’ve gone from having issues as big as those to 5ing albums before so don’t lose all hope. There is a very, very fine line between ramshackle charm and just plain bad so I will see where this lands.

Blimey. The bone has initially miscalculated. Hope he’s not malfunctioning. Might need a spanner to tighten the nuts and bolts.
