Though I will say appreciating it kinda requires forgetting it's by the same band that made Leviathan and its understandable that some people can't/don't want to do that

^ yeah that's literally it. just feels like a different band -- they traded in the mythological concept-album thing for "let's write a dozen fun songs" and it's really not that big a deal once the bubble is popped. this seems like a step back in that direction, for those of us who love the immersion and "journey" (at least that appears to be the consensus. I haven't felt it yet.)

The Hunter was one of the most disappointing listens I’ve ever had given how incredible Leviathan, Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye were and at the time Mastodon were probably my favourite band.
It’s not bad it just felt so beneath them as musicians and songwriters.
This is definitely the best since CTS, especially the second half where they feel heavy and sludgy again at times and bring back some of those amazing Leviathan clean guitar tones. The final run of tracks are the standout for me.
