Broken Man was a bit underwhelming at first but it's really clicking for me after a few listens.

About Halfway through this and man am I glad that this is gonna be the last DT album for me for awhile (I'm probably not gonna listen to the new one for a bit), cause man I can't tell if band fatigue kicked in fully or this really is as mid as I think.

The album is good but I can see what you mean. Sometimes it also happens to me. Maybe with Portnoy we can have something more enthusiastic.

was expecting a goofy ballad as they seem to always drop one of those before the album but nah lol
WE ARE SO FUCKING BACK MEN
this one def has the most portnoy influence. the second half reminds me a lot of nightmare-era avenged sevenfold actually lmao

I loved the buildup, it's probably the best song so far
But then the vocals kicked in

New song is pretty cool. The intro especially builds up really nicely. Also a fan of the double time chorus

This record is actually quite nicely creative, just a shame LaBrie is on this. With the backing vocals like in Answering the Call the downside gets hidden quite a bit. Listening to this after the latest one you really here how Mangini is just a tighter and more technical drummer, but really lacks the organic flair that Portnoy has. I am wondering though if it is just Mangini's playing or some sampling/quantization

It is a great last record for Mangini though. I wish they trimmed 10 minutes of the last track, the rest of the album is surprisingly enjoyable.

goddamn this album lowkey slaps so hard. alien, answering the call, sleeping giant, and awaken the master are really great. easily the best production job they've had since the 00s too.
"I am wondering though if it is just Mangini's playing or some sampling/quantization"
i think its a combination of a) mangini being a tighter drummer, b) mangini having less creative freedom than portnoy, and c) mangini's drums being sample replaced/quantized to death and just overall mixed horribly with the exception of this one.
