Nearly every song here has an unforgettable lyric
I was drawn in by the music but stayed for the concept/writing
This is a total revolution compared to what the band used to be

I don't really know what this band is capable of. Kinda interesting to see this reception, in such a late take. Peaked my interest.

I refuse to believe a Killers album is this good in 2021.

Have you never heard a Killers album?

I loved Hot Fuss, the next 2 albums were pretty cool.
After that they fell off a cliff for me.

They fell off a cliff even earlier for me, ha. Hot Fuss was basically half amazing singles and half filler, but I have so much nostalgia for it. Sam's Town was their best until now, IMO. But Day & Age was a sharp decline with only a few good songs (A Dustland Fairytale is still amazing, though), Battle Born was utterly average, Wonderful Wonderful was more of the same, and that Christmas album was hilariously bad. If you haven't yet, you should check Imploding the Mirage. It's like a cross between Sam's Town and Day & Age, not as good as the former but not as bad as the latter. That slight improvement last year is the only real reason I even had any semblance of expectations for this one.

Wow, this has just clicked! Hit me on a more emotional level this morning. Bumped it to a 4.

Awesome. I think it's the quality of the lyrics/themes that's doing that for a lot of people. I've always enjoyed The Killers for their songwriting ability and penchant for having solid melodic hooks, but this one has something to it that no other release of theirs does. I'm so glad they made the last minute decision to include the Nephi interviews too; from what I understand they almost didn't.

In The Car Outside is a jammer and the title track is pretty gorgeous, but the rest kinda drags for me.

I think the unity of the atmosphere will work against the interests of some listeners, although I am personally thrilled that they finally wrote something this cohesive. Curious which parts drag for you the most. The opening sequence of songs is brilliant for me, and it also ends really strong, so I'm guessing somewhere in the middle.

yeah, that middle part from tracks 3-6. opening 2 tracks are solid and it picks back up at the end.

Terrible thing is a lyrical knife to the heart, and I like Cody a fair bit, but I could see someone getting bored by Sleepwalker (which isn't quite on the lyrical level of the other songs here) or Runaway Horses, which has a nice melody but is otherwise sort of just a breeze.

Never been that big on the Killers, this was no exception. But Damn did this just go from a 2 tot a solid 4. Only the middle part of the album is a little mediocre.

i wonder how many people have drawn comparisons between this and gkmc

I feel like any time a band grossly under delivers for like a decade and then puts out something pretty solid people are wont to praise it as some huge masterpiece. I've had some time to analyze the lyrics during my recent campimg trip and they're pretty good, but come on lol. This is fairly by-the-book for Americana, and there are definitely some boring ass songs here. Just wait a few months/years from now and I'll bet anything that the majority of people lauding this as a landmark record (after a meager few days of digesting it) will realize they jumped the gun. I highly doubt this has the longevity of their first two albums - it certainly doesn't have the fun factor. I will say though, it's far from a bad album. I'm adding a couple of songs from this to my 2021 playlist, I just can't help but question the hype it's getting, and think it's a bit one-tone

This is a great record, full of rich instrumentation, authenticity and empathy, Brandon Flowers' best set of lyrics and tangible presence from the original guitarist Dave Keuning brought back into the fold. I already feel it's an album I'll always want to listen to in full, which isn't the case for all Killers albums (would also do this with Sam's Town and Imploding the Mirage - and maybe Day & Age if I can swap out the weaker songs near the end for the superior B-sides). A 4 right now, and definite potential to go up to a 4.5 in time.
Highlights right now for me are West Hills, the beautiful title track, In the Car Outside, Terrible Thing and Runaway Horses.
