"Just because Fiction has the same sound doesn't mean it's on the same level as the other two. Always thought of it as a step down from the two near masterpieces before it."
I agree, it's always been weird to me that people say Fiction continued what Character started. Character is a dense, technical and high tempo album, but Fiction is mostly midtempo with very simplified instrumentation. The guitars especially are very basic, with lots of chugs and power chords compared to the frenetic riff fest on Character. It's still a great album, The Lesser Faith is a top 10 DT song for me, but it isn't on the same level as Damage Done or Character.

Empires is one of the best if not the best on here imo

"I didn't call Fiction "weak", I said it's one of the weakest DT releases. Solid 3.5/5 for sure."
Agreed, except is the fucking best

Martin really shines on that, the synth layers are lush and amazing

I'm just so glad this sounds like a DT album and a great one at that, the new guys are killing it

I've spun this 3 times now and I like it more and more as I go along. Empire is definitely good - not sure what I was thinking on the first listen when I picked it out as a weak track. As I said, I was at work, so was just sort of getting a general impression of each song without being able to properly focus.
Not ready to rate yet. Maybe in a couple of days...

My favorite from what I've heard is Damage Done.
Listened to this today and was pretty cool.

Character is their best IMO it never gets old like Damage Done. I got fed up pretty quickly with Damage done, it doesn't have enough meat to it. I love everything DT has released and my rankings would be the following.
Character > The Gallery > Haven > Construct > Fiction > Atoma >= Damage Done >= Moment > Projector > We are The Void > Mind's I > Skydancer

Gotta rejam the whole discog cuz i don't remember jack shit about most of them, only Fiction and the laters

Character sounds more precise, songwriting and production wise. Damage Done has great songs all the way through but the mix and Stanne's performance is a bit off in comparison to later albums.

Instrumentation is great, cant get into the vocals. I'm actually surprised to see some of you guys who dig this, would've never thought it.
And just when you think you know someone pfft....

i think i'm of the minority here that think the cleans here kinda ruin some of these songs too.
i prefer mikael when he uses his cleans in a far more subdued way. i listen to tracks like standstill and the chorus just grates me. in my head i hear the same chorus with his harsh vocals and it works *so* much better. if they had that with the melody as a synth or guitar line behind it it would have been sweet.
like his cleans work when used in 'ego deception' - supplementary to the song to add to its melancholy. 'the dark unbroken' has a subdued chorus too so it works. that's how they were used in construct and to a lesser extent atoma (and definitely on my favourite track on atoma - merciless fate).
this album is begging for more bite and juxtaposition and it just isn't there.
