I hope they drop some B-Sides for this album like Counterparts did with NLTL and Private Room.

I dunno, apparently they recorded 14 songs for the Ultraviolet sessions and scrapped a few. Like 99% sure I read that somewhere in this thread

"Pretty sure this is longer than every Counterparts record except one lol"

Fairly accurate yea, but was not my point. The last two counterparts albums in particular saw a pretty condensed songwriting process which lead to the final runtime being significantly shorter than what they had put out previously.

T'is the same in this case with Misery Signals.

I dunno for me anything above the 30 minute mark is pretty standard for anything hardcore adjacent, like this isn’t Tool we’re talking about here

Bands like Poison the Well, Converge, Norma Jean, Hopesfall and others had typically floated around 40 mins for album run times. Misery Signals included in that, until now.

Dependent on how ruthless or consistently original it is, 30 minutes sometimes feels like a steal. Either way, doesn't matter too much. Overall I don't have an issue with 30 minute albums the vast majority of the time.

Never been much for these, I love Counterparts and can hear the comparison, but Misery Signals just never clicked... until this album. This is the best album of the year so far by a mile, it's like Counterparts on steroids, the intricacies in the guitar playing add so much depth, the bass is clear and not just there for the sake of it, and the drumming is ridiculously tight. I have to disagree with someone further up, "The Fall" is one of the best songs on the album. As I said, best album of 2020 so far for me.

that take, yikes. this album sucks, but if everyone in counterparts was somehow able to triple their skill level, they still wouldn't make something half as good as this.

River King is such a funny song. It would probably be a top 10 MS song if it weren't for those random cringy ass "URGHHH" 's they decided to put in there. Extremely weird song structure in this album.

This is actually a great metalcore album by todays standards, considering most bands (like counterparts) put out unlistenable garbage. It's just a bad MS album.

Counterparts are fucking dope. So are Misery Signals. Shut your pie hole. Albums not their best but still enjoyable. It happens.

I really have to wonder what this is missing that a more recent counterparts album would have?

Man 9-10 song albums are becoming the new norm I guess. Too damn short and The Tempest thru The Fall were all decent songs but the album feels short. It feels more like 7 songs in total counting out Vales and Redemption Key. Weird interlude songs. Less content makes it harder to give it a higher rating.

"if only it was as good as a Counterparts record"

NLTLs first half was pretty good but then the second half falls off. Cherish, Oceans and Imprints becomes follow the same song structure that gets boring after 2 listens and they both do that super cheesy thing where they end a breakdown then bring the song to a soft tone which makes me cringe and hit the next song.

Your Own Knife was supposed to be that "heavy" song but both first and second breakdowns didn't hit hard enough like in Thieves or Slaves. The breakdown in The Hands That Used to Hold Me is heavier surprisingly.

NLTL also has two interlude style songs too, Love Me and self titled.

So in my eyes this isn't that much different than Counterparts NLTL given the fact that both first halfs of both bands albums slap and it falls off at the second half.
