production is too messy even for bm. Songwriting sounds quite typical. Really can't understand the ratings

"really can't understand the ratings" said me for like 7 years about the s/t.

This feels like a Sadness (the dsbm band) situation. The people that love it reeeeeealy love it, and most everyone else is like I don't really get it, it's fine I guess.

Yeah I think some people might be thinking about it too hard.

Personally I think it's neat when you have a genre of extreme music that not a majority of people are into in the first place (metal), and then within that you have a subgenre that only a relatively small number of people from that group are into (bm), and then within that something like this that only speaks to a small handful of us. Feels cozy.

changed the summary from "new standard" to gold standard. some good points were made (not exactly reinventing the wheel here) but I do think this is close to the best the genre has to offer. already in my top 5 favorite atmospheric bm albums hands down. If the summary still feels lame/weak just let me know and I'll nuke the whole damn thing for something else lol (I hate summaries)..

"Le reve lucid is so good"

yesss. that's the first track that reaaally stood out to me. how they keep that guitar riff and melody going for 13 minutes without growing stale is just crazy

^^^Sensible adjustment. This is probably my number 1 atmo bm. What are the others in your top 5?

And the background goings on change up quite a bit, I think that's how. Like the drum patterns, and the basslines.

probs pretty generic but I'm thinking..

Agalloch - Pale Folklore

Walknut - Graveforests and Their Shadows

Falls of Rauros - Vigilance Perennial

Drudkh - Autumn Aurora

THIS ALBUM

Nhor - Within the Darkness Between the Starlight

Bands like Downfall of Nur and Selvans also really hit the spot. obvs like Darkspace in addition to Pasyage. For good cosmic bm I dig Spectral Lore and Mare Cognitum. I could really go on and on, haha

Haha, no wonder we both love this album, Nhor and Walknut are my 2 and 3 after this, and I really like Pale Folklore (more than Ashes and Mantle, which is probably…against the grain…sorry).

I also love Falls of Rauros and need more listens of Vigilance, but my favorite from them has always been Hail Wind. More gritty/raw/stripped down. Kinda like this!

Not as into Drudkh as I probably should be, will make a point of relistening to some of their stuff (starting with Autumn Aurora).

And if you like Mare and Spectral, you should check out Mesarthim, especially Ghost Condensate.

a list I made previously with my favorite atmospheric metal albums (not all bm but if you're curious). will probably make an updated list pretty soon as I feel a binge coming on which is rare for me in the summer

thanks for the rec, Portal! I'll check that out. Re Drudkh: Autumn Aurora was one of the first atmospheric bm albums I ever heard besides Agalloch's stuff so I think it just really made an impression on me and holds a special place in my heart

Wow yeah our taste (for atmospheric metal at least) is really damn close, I've heard like 80% of that list and love like 80% of what I heard.

Fauna and Galar look really interesting, gotta check those.
