Is that supposed to be directed at me? I think it's incredibly odd that you replied so quickly to my comment when your last comment was 4 months ago. Do you stalk comments all day?

there's a tab on the front page called "My Discussions" which updates when a page you commented on has a new comment

Yeah it did sound like it was plucked right out of 1998 lol. New song is growing on me after a couple listens but I'm still not entirely sure about this song. I don't think Jami's vocals are quite there yet. I'm kinda hoping this is a single off an EP, however Underneath's first single was poppy but then Swallowing the Rabbit Hole was released shortly after so maybe that's what they're doing. At the very least it promises more Reba guitar solos.

Also honest question to Sputnik: in a site that is as metal populist as it gets, how is this any more cringe and tryhard than like 85% of the metal albums that gets highly praised on here?

idk 85% of the (recently) highly praised metal albums kinda suck usually, this just also sucks

because their whole "were the new kings of hardcore" schtick doesnt work when youre making music that sounds like any dime a dozen bottom barrel nu metal band from 20 years ago.

This album grew on me a little but Out for Blood is staight dogshit

yeah it sounds like nu metal but like the best possible version of nu metal.

would much rather take that than so many of the flavorless and monochromatic metal albums released in the past decade that insists its not cringe and is in fact gritty and serious

The best possible version of nu metal can be found on Mudvayne's LD 50. Id love if Code Orange had less of a "we're edgy" matrix-movie extra vibe, and more musical experimentation. There's some fun ass Nu Metal, I find Code Orange to be kind of brooding and melodramatic in their themes, and the actual music isnt taking that many risks or bringing new shit to either of the genres they do.

I’m still just salty as hell that we got Cycles and Love is Love and then they kind of just slowly devolved into this schlock tbh.

I'd argue what they've done on Underneath is way more ambitious that being a 2nd rate Converge on Love is Love. There's a lot of complexity and attention to detail to the songs, featuring a lot of variety while still being cohesive.

“2nd rate Converge on Love is Love”

As opposed to being a 3rd rate nu metal band.

Also I don’t really get where the converge comparison comes in. They’re both “hardcore” but Code Orange was way sludgier on their early albums with some grind influence here and there. They never really sounded like Converge imo

Mainly with the quieter, more post metal-ish stuff like Colors (Into Nothing) reminds me of some of the doomier stuff on the more recent Converge records. Keep in mind “2nd rate Converge” is still a solid place to be in but the slower parts on that album feel forced

Yeah I personally think them going for pure maximalism fits them better. Feels more honest to what they are as a band
