It's definitely a step up from this but still the wrong direction imo.

Was kinda into Bankrupt but they just had to go and ruin it with that chorus eh

"It's definitely a step up from this but still the wrong direction imo."
Agreed. I think these guys have been trending downwards hard ever since Neil left the band, although This Is How the Wind Shifts is dramatically better than Rescue, but I think a lot of that has to do with Shane's voice not being annoying like it was on most of Shipwreck and Rescue.

New song is shit, but it might sound better within the context of an album.
"I think these guys have been trending downwards hard ever since Neil left the band"
agreed 100%

Considering they had been trending downwards since Waterfront until Wind Shifts I'm not sure I can agree with that statement. I also am uninformed on what, if any, contributions he made towards songwriting while in the band.
I do know that wind shifts is the pinnacle of their career in my opinion and it's definitely their most consistent in terms of songwriting. Imo it's their best but at the very least I'm guessing most people would agree it's better than 4 out of the 5 albums that came before it.
I am alive might start the downward trend but it was a good follow up just couldn't reach the same level. From there though they seemed to be struggling with their creative edge.

ppl really underrate rescue but its a ripper

I'm afraid to ask what album you think is better than Waterfront in the 3 albums between.

Waterfront is their best album. That does not mean that I don't disagree with your initial statement.
"ppl really underrate rescue but its a ripper"
That album is nothing but heat.

Yeah I think Waterfront is easily their best. My favorite is probably When Broken Is Easily Fixed but Waterfront is their peak. I love their first two EPs as well (the original version of Friends in Fall River is just *chef's kiss*) and nothing has ever clicked with me like those 4 releases, granted these guys were my favorite band for a couple years back in middle school.
This Is How the Wind Shifts is a really good album but it doesn't resonate with me for some reason.
Also, not huge on Rescue but The Artist is such a banger of a song that it's enough to save the entire album.
Discovering the Waterfront > When Broken Is Easily Fixed > 18 Candles > Arrivals and Departures > Shipwreck > Transitions > Wind Shifts > Rescue > I don't give a shit anymore
Shoutout to the Redux albums for having some wonderful re-recordings though.

@Light and Glass I am Alive and even Dead Reflection are worth of giving a shit about. This is really the only album hat fits in that bin.
The new single sucks just as much as this album. Truly awful direction for what WAS one of the most consistent bands ever.
