In a case of the worst timing possible, Insomnium and Omnium Gatherum were able to play exactly one show on their North American tour before safety concerns surrounding the corona virus forced both bands to cancel the entire tour, pack up, and go home. Needless to say, this was financially devastating to both bands, and they have expressed doubts on their social media pages that they will be able to continue functioning as working bands in the future.
I had assembled a few people together to go to the show tomorrow night, and we were all bummed the show was canceled, but seeing these posts about the uncertain future of the bands just adds salt to the wound. Let's hope they are able to recover and continue sometime down the road.

Yes, it's a real goddamn bummer. Loads of tours being cancelled right now. I hope the pandemic storm subsides soon.

Markus Vanhala is an amazing songwriter and player. He is one of my top guitar idols. Probably a top 3 guitarist for me in terms of artistic direction. But man is he sloppy live. It's the kind of mistakes that come from just not caring enough too. Like making up his own out of time picking patterns, picking extra notes, playing out of time, cutting corners on riffs, out of key slides and bends, inappropriate pinch harmonics, lots of extra noise in the playing, and often butchering the phrasing of guitar leads and melodies. I remember when I saw Omnium Gatherum in 2016 he told me he felt bad because he doesn't practice anymore. It's crazy because he is still able to crank out this incredible compositions for the studio regularly. And melodic death metal requires an extra precise performance to come across as well as it should. Which I expect they would want to do because they already have these amazing songs written and now just need to perform them cleanly. I knew the livestream would put a microscope on his playing and it's still there. The guy really seems like he's on autopilot live.

Really? When I saw them play Winter's Gate start to finish he was totally on point from like 5 feet away. Maybe because they just finished that record and it was fresh on his brain, or because it was pretty deep into the tour, but he played really well. I caught OG with DT a year or two ago and he also sounded pretty good then too. Interesting though, I might have just caught him on an on day.

Maybe I'm being too harsh. I've seem Omnium Gatherum twice and Insomnium once and every time sounded pretty great. I think being there in person makes little things less noticable too. I may be focusing on mistakes. I'm not trying to say it's for sure, just something I noticed. If I didn't see many others noticing then I'd be fine accepting it's more a me thing.
