On my first listen and so far, it is not too bad. However, it seems a little lacklustre in comparison to previous efforts. Haven't listened the whole way through but I have a feeling it is between a 3.5 and a 4.

Polarizing or not, Eye for a Lie is objectively the most interesting track - never heard Toby do any rapping prior to this

Agreed, it's defo the one that pushes the boat out. However, between that one sounding terrible (imo) and the rest of this basically being a less interesting retread of Hubardo, this isn't exactly a career highlight :/

I caught their show in NC on Saturday, and you could tell Toby wasn't happy. He complained/shamed about a third of the audience (who were relatives/there to see a local band) who cleared out after the local band played.
I've actually felt really underwhelmed about this album, but seeing it live helped me appreciate it more. Having two drummers was actually pretty cool to see in a live setting too.

I really hate it when bands / artists moan to the audience about turnout / people walking out. If you're in quite an inaccessible genre, you'd surely understand that you're not going to draw in new people easily - if you're still complaining, maybe you ought to do more promoting instead of blaming other people for your problems.
After seeing a Reddit AMA with Toby being continuously condescending to people, I'm not surprised he's a miserable git on stage too.

both you guys hit the nail on the head, both times i saw him he seemed unhappy/ slightly angry

Heckle the fucker back. Give him some stick.

From following his fb over the last few years, he seems pretty chewed up by the practical difficulties of making ambitious music for small audiences, compounded by moving cities :/ He used to have a much more positive vibe, but it's an attritional thing I guess - feel sorry for him at the end of the day, and sucks it's a vicious cycle re. how it comes off to audiences
|
| |
...or alternatively, screw that + take the zak route lmao
|
| |
Sounds like a right bellend believing that he is some tortured artist whose music is undervalued by those who should be privileged to hear it.
Fuck off mate.
|
| |
This is actually alright though
|
| |
Well I say alright but it’s typical Dot in that it flip flops between lovely and absolute bobbins in a matter of milliseconds.
|

Yeah, that FB post about touring being tough really made me lose a little respect for him. He also was shilling for money to help keep them on tour. Man, get someone better to book your concerts. Stop playing in shitty places. I've seen more challenging bands in bigger venues than Kayo Dot has ever played in. He also called Kayo Dot a "fringe" band. If they're a fringe band, what's his main band?
He looked he really into it at the show in Cambridge,MA , but that's their original stomping grounds, so that was a homecoming show for them.

Lol what

Also all music fans are complete knobs so I have tonnes of respect for musicians who are willing to be complete cunts to people. Like let's not act like all consumers arent entitled wankers who live to abuse any output of any creator or musician or developer or maker of anything in this nightmare hellscape of capitalism we reside in. Anybody in the position of Toby basically either has to be a complete bitch ass pushover who pretends they love all their fans absolutely so they don't anger the hive, or they can do the CORRECT thing and belittle every little turd who thinks they have the right to respect bc they enjoy the music or paid for a show.
|
| |
So it's okay to be a dickhead to someone who didn't do anything to offend you AND paid for your show?

>act like a cunt to people who pay for tickets / CDs / merch
>is surprised when they stop supporting you
What are you smoking Gallantin? Nobody insinuated that Toby needs to personally give every audience member a handjob - we're saying that whining about people who don't like their music / didn't come to see Kayo Dot specifically to the people who -did- come to see Kayo Dot is both pointless and a buzzkill
Also nice awkward shoehorn of le capitalism bogeyman - being a poor struggling musician doesn't give them a free pass to be an asshole to the people trying to support them.

Many of my friends work their asses off to make a living through their music and they would never dream about berating their fans because they're the ones paying their bills
You can be as edgy and pretentious as you like trying to argue that musicians are elevated artists who don't owe the world anything - but the opposite holds more truth. Sure, there are a few rare exceptions of pompous asshats like Morrissey who've made it and can afford to be everyone's enemy - but from the sounds of Kayo Dot's pitiful turnout on tour, I doubt Toby can continue to get away with it before people get tired of it all

""the rest of this basically being a less interesting retread of Hubardo"
Lol what"
I get similar vibes from a lot of this to the first half of that album, especially Crown In the Muck and Thief. Those songs are much stronger imo, but the tone and melody here is cut from similar cloth
