But there are people who dig Attila though. And think they are amazing. Confusing as it may be.

"I think you can brace yourself for another major influx when the new Tool album drops."

Its weird...I joined this site because I was listening to bands noone I knew was listening and needed to trade feedbacks. You always have a friend who digs Tool or Slipknot lol

rym is a shithole full of tryhards and jaded divorced 40 year old men who sit in the corner of the pub waiting for someone to talk about 13th floor elevators to but actually everyone else is out enjoying life and having meaningful experiences rather than their only hobby being 1ing the new taylor swift single

That is a very specific description for a very large group of people.

Also, 1ing whole discographies and every bloody single is pretty stupid, why would you do that?

I know Attila (unfortunately) has a fanbase, was mostly a joke.

However, I do contend that there is objectivity to art. It's not about the feelings/sensations but rather about the musical/production elements that are implemented in a given album. For example, we could agree that the production on some Icelandic black metal album is objectively poor: let's say things sound too hazy and distant, the vocals are poorly integrated, the bass is drowned in the mix, etc. We can agree that those are objectively poor quality choices.

Where we may disagree is in the sphere of subjectivity, or how exactly those objective factors effect us as listeners. One may contend that the production is fitting because the guitars have a good bite to them, the hazy production supplying a dissonant edge that allows for a haunting atmosphere. Another may similarly argue that they see the production as lackluster and hampering the sonic potential of the group since it limits members of the band.

True, one cannot, nor should not, rate under the banner of complete objectivity. But to say definitively that objectivity does not exist is false.

But Attila, terrible as their music may be, have actually got decent production on their albums. Also, don't forget that your headphones factor in this too. Some people use apple earphones and judge their experience solely through that. And some people still listen to low-bitrate MP3s.

I used to think Blut Aus Nord was just a dumb wall of noise until I got good headphones.

What if someone thinks its not, though? How do you prove them wrong? How can they prove themselves right?

I described previously that if the vocals and bass and buried in the production, that is objectively poor but not necessarily subjectively poor. If you have decent-enough headphones and those contributing factors are drowned out, you can prove that the band has failed to make their production even.

Like I said, we may reach a subjective conclusion based upon that, wherein we may find the balance of the production makes it so there is a powerful atmosphere and dissonant vibe.

I wasn't using Attila as an example, just a random black metal release I pulled out of thin air to make a point. I'm not trying to say objective rating is possible, just that objectivity does exist, with subjectivity being what inevitably guides our ratings.

What about And Justice For All though? That has no bass at all. Does that make it objectively crap? The average certainly suggests otherwise...

Once again, we come to a subjective conclusion that does not necessarily match to the objective. In that sort of example we can come to the agreement that the missing bass presence does not hamper the album's quality.

My point is NOT that objectivity is the end-all be-all but that it is a factor, and from objective aspects we can come to subjective findings. I have not advocated for pure objectivity at all in this thread, in fact I've argued the opposite.

i think any attempt to fall back on an objective framework is heavily reliant on famiiarity to musical canons past and present. it will inherently favour that which is established and be familiar with what was once established, which can produce a positive or negative reaction seemingly at random. you need only to look outside of the western musical canon to other cultures to find an altogether different objective framework, suggesting that such a framework is itself subjective and insular

Trust me, I'm a subjective guy. I was just saying objectivity can't be rules out completely, not that it should be the definitive criteria.
