I'm not sure you know what joking around means. It's not acting like a 12 year old on a sugar high.
Or wait, maybe it is. Sorry!

"No overlong repetitive riffs that overstay their welcome, switching it up just enough to keep things interesting."
I'm gonna disagree. Some riffs drag on simply because it's a vocal part and therefore they can't change the riffs during the vocal part. This would have been much tighter and more dynamic if they didn't have to carve out space for the vocals.

the guitar writing is awful. 95% of the record is in one mode yet the guitarists insist on trying to force every bar to sound different, often causing diminishing returns with lead repetitions. it’d be blasphemy to play a good lead more than once so make sure to play it again but slightly different and potentially worse in the next bar! and then again in the next one. also if one lead isn’t enough, add a second lead. doesn’t matter what he’s doing, just make sure lots of notes are happening!
I reckon it’d do the band good to learn modulating can be a little more nuanced than playing a note that’s shared by two keys and hard snapping over, too.. I’m almost under the impression the guitarists wanted to write a prog album but didn’t know how, and neither the drummer nor bassist got the memo. probably doesn’t help every time the bassist does anything rhythmically interesting it comes with the caveat of abandoning the tonic notes in search of god. I’ll fight anyone here under 5”2 in the street

That's fair game, ramon. I think there's nothing wrong with a black metal record relying mainly on subtle changes rather than constantly doing a 180 and throwing random stuff at the listener. This is my main problem with prog bands and trash like Periphery who have zero songwriting capabilities.

@Ramon: what do you think of the riffs/guitar work on that False album, as a comparison? I’m just curious. This sounds very cohesive to me (and so does False), but that one sounds less interesting to my ears, as it relies on repetition.

I would actually love if ramon reviewed this album. His reviews are always a pleasure to read. Even if he and I completely disagree.

Definitely agree with you there Pika. I just find this album to be a mix of unnecessary small changes paired with jank transitions and while it’s nowhere near as blatant as shit Periphery and their ilk throw together, I think a lot of similar issues to pertain to this record. Appreciate the kind words, I’ll add it to the considerations list.
Haven’t actually jammed it, Demon! I’ll have to take a spin, I’ll get back to you on it.
Hate is a strong word, Kaiwaz. I wouldn’t invite the album to my sleepover though.
