There is something ‘Chinese Democracy’ desperate about this - sounds expensive but also feels like it was constructed like a Lego kit.

Something experimental in a ‘non music’ way about it. More like an actual musical I guess - needs the stage production stuff to make any sense as entertainment :/

I think the lack of flow/coherent direction in a lot of the songs is the worst part about this and makes it hard for a lot of people to stomach. Overall a lot of dope stuff though and I'm excited to keep listening. Evermore, Hear Me, and especially Why? are favorites.

‘Why?’ is like a terrible pastiche of musicals with Cookie Monster shart vocals added

Not sure why this is seen as a good moment

Genre experiments aren’t good just for being different to usual output, I dunno

Um no, its good because its a well crafted, eclectic song with great lead vocals and an interesting progression

I really don't get the hate a lot of you guys have against this. I get why people wouldn't like this, but you make it seem like it's one of the worst things anyone has ever recorded. You would put this on the same level as things like the last Imagine Dragons album or the like. At least this has thought, energy and effort put behind it, and is not clocked in just because the label said so. I could never 1 an album if those things are clear to me, but hey that may just be me.

'well crafted, eclectic'

this pair of descriptors always sets off alarm bells for me but fair enough

I think it's a pretty average song and a silly treatment

You grade just for effort and intentions?

Nah, I'm too mean for charity rating - but everything is measured against the same yard stick, so a super fair system.

I've now listened to it twice - this time in bed, headphones, darkened room, the works mate

Most 1 out of 5 quality albums don't the royal treatment for a second spin - Dev's lucky I like him tbh to be honest tbh

Well I'm a musician in a band who make complex and long albums with a lot of orchestras and choirs. I know how many thousands of manhours it takes to create an album like this. 1'ing it to me feels like a complete insult to the artist. When I 1 something I feel almost personally insulted that the artist even dares to release it, because it has no qualities and no thought put behind it.

But again, that could just be the way I would rate things. Apparently you have a way different way of rating lol.

This has no qualities of entertainment for me.

Manhours, technical innovation, money, bloodsweattears...these get pumped into blockbusters but if the story doesn't snag me and the acting doesn't ring true it gets the thumbs down.

I've got news for you, the final piece is everything - if those things don't translate into worthwhile, interesting and moving art they are just what they are, the credit roll.

I've never judged a movie off of the credits...and I'll never rate music off the credits.

People can rate however they want though, a sense of solidarity between artists sounds like a nice thing sure. I have rated some stuff by Townsend highly btw, I just don't have a high sense of loyalty if someone releases something I don't enjoy.

Also I hate to say it but this album actually received a 0.5 rating from me on my RYM account which means it is one of the 300 bottom rated albums I've listened to and rated there.

There's not one song I'd play again for enjoyment, only curiosity, which is running out now after two full listens

I think those things like blood, sweat and tears always come through for me in some form. For instance I can hear and feel that all that got put into this, which changes the way I listen to it and almost always makes me enjoy it more.

I agree though that people should try and view albums without giving it too much of a free pass because of who created it.

I like Dev generally as a person and I can hear he put a lot into this - it just isn't for me at all
