There was basically no one there at the show near me. Sad times.

I’m envious of you all who saw Toby live this tour. I did see all of this material at the Roulette show last year but they weren’t very fleshed out yet I presumed but he did have Keith Abrams on drums so that was a plus I guess. Will see him w/Kayo Dot at Prophecy Fest USA in 2 weeks though. Should be fun to hear the new KD material played for the first time.

he played a lot of stripped down stuff, interesting interpretations of madonnawhore and a few from TATS. my favorite was probably a noise guitar version of Craven's Dawn with like a weird pulsating club beat in the background I assume was just coming from his laptop. his whole performance had me in a trance-like state. it was calming but very surreal.
the only downside is it was just toby, and his guitar, gear, and mac. would've been cool to see him with a band. still the best act of the entire show.

"New KD material!? ^_^"
Yep. Recorded earlier this year not too long after the recording sessions for They Are The Shield. New line-up, and a new label: Prophecy Productions. They're one of a few bands playing Prophecy Fest USA as a result of being signed to the label's newly launched American branch. Among the other bands playing the fest are headliners Alcest performing the Kodama album, Eye Of Nix, So Hideous, and the reformed non-black metal/"doomgrass" version of Xasthur.

I remember wondering where he was in their latest band pic. Too bad, he's a crazy good drummer.

Hey guys, I’ll be seeing Kayo Dot’s set at Prophecy Fest USA. I’ll let you all know how the new songs turn out...if I can remember them!
Edit: Ok. Their set just finished. I’ll keep this succinct. It’s wild (especially the guitars and vocals) and totally different. Also, it’s a double drummer lineup.

haha what? That does sound wild. Was it noisy?

“Was it noisy?”
Yes! Possibly the most loudest and noisiest (guitar and drum-wise) renditions of The Mortality Of Doves and Passing The River as well. Those were the only two older songs they played live, in addition to 3 or 4 (can't remember the exact number) of the new songs.
IDK how else to describe the new material other than compared to PHOBOS, this sounds...spastic. Ron must’ve been on guitar ecstasy cause I’ve never seen him so animated the past two times I’ve seen Kayo Dot live. Should note that Toby introduced every new track by name but because I kept getting blown away by each subsequent new song, I forgot all of their titles already, hahaha.
"hnnnnnggg (double drummers)"
Get excited. One guy drummed on a normal kit, and the other guy was standing playing bass drum (w/sticks), floor tom, snare, a pair of cymbals, a tambourine, and I believe what looked like a conga. The two alternated kits depending on the song.
Regarding the label switch: in their press release, Toby thanked The Flenser for encouraging the band to sign w/Prophecy. No ill-will as to the reason why KD left the label for Prophecy.

I need to see that, sounds like a party haha

Yeah, I guess I could categorize the forthcoming KD album "progressive party rock", haha.
It's quite funny that the crowd was more polite at being quiet when Ron was tuning his guitar than we were for Xasthur's entire set, Toby threw a light jab at us for said reception to Xasthur.

Is it similar to PHOBOS at all or another new direction? I saw some cell phone vids and it sounded a bit like Hubardo with synths.

"it sounded a bit like Hubardo with synths"
That's actually a pretty decent description. At times the new songs sounded like Hubardo's cacophonous moments with PHOBOS' multi-layered synth soundscapes, but at the time, I was actually thinking they sounded something similar to The Assassination Of Adam but turned up a knob and w/extra percussion. I wouldn't say it's a return to a metal sound, but it's a step in that direction without being metal if that makes sense.
Push comes to shove, I consider this new material as going in a new direction on the basis of the double drummer lineup.
