I get where plane is coming from tbh but is there anything wrong with music being aggressively assured of its own importance? not saying the sound suits all, but sometimes I like my music a little bit cocky and with some swagger.

kinda what I was getting at with the rap comparison. it's like making fun of the kid on the other team for being a try hard when your team is losing 10-1

This album is like being out of cigarettes and pay day is tomorrow so you walk around looking for someone that's smoking and you finally find a person smoking so you go up and ask to bum a boge and they give you one but it's a Marlboro ultra light 100 and you smoke Newports

I feel that "tryhard" and "self-important" deepen the disdain rather than being inherently negative qualities (If you love an album those labels won't diminish your enjoyment). They went into the album with the goal of "leaving our mark on music history," so it ain't surprising that the project is self-aggrandizing. Problem is the pre-emptive classic-making had them throw any notion of taste out of the window.

What are bands supposed to do though? "I think we'll enter the studio this time and try to craft something so-so" isn't what I imagine many artists thinking to themselves. I still get that the epic, over the top posturing isn't going to sit well with everyone - and that's perfectly fine - but there's nothing inherently wrong with going into something with the goal of making your mark on history or whatever. Just my take.

This album is...frustrating. Mainly because of the drastic shift in quality from song to song. There are some genuinely beautiful moments on this record (title track, Trapped in Dillard's, Lambert) but there are some real bad moments too (first 2/3 of Lich Prince, Gameshark, Crown Candy). It's not bad, just a real inconsistent album that leads to the overall listening experience being a bit of a mess. Sad I feel this way since Albatross and Dealer are phenomenal albums.

It's 2018 and bands aren't allowed to want to make classics anymore I guess
set out to underwhelm so I can 4 for being pleasantly surprised or bust baby

The interviews have said Chris Walla was the one who was pushing the "LETS MAKE A CLASSIC" angle
