Hourglass is a pretty cool tune, especially the final 2 minutes or so

i certainly understand the hate for it tho haha

I can't say the lyrics are lazily written. "TalkTalk," "The Doomed," "Feathers," and many others have some great lyrics to them. They aren't nearly as lazy as a Three Days Grace or Imagine Dragons record.

Yeah after a few listens I can't say any of these songs are bad. Only thing I can really say is that I heavily prefer my homemade track list (and probably any alternative, the original ordering sucks) and that I wish there were more intense/heavy songs. Outside of those minor issues, this might be my new favorite APC (Thirteenth Step still has the slight edge).

I honestly like this more than Thirteenth Step

This is probably one of Maynard's finest performances, lyrics or not

Yep. His vocals sound great and are the highlight of the record.

I don't really see why people say it's one of his best performances.

Technically, he doesn't really hit much high chest notes (not anything above two pretty good G#4s in TalkTalk) and neither any notable low notes. I'm not too keen on his heightened use of falsetto but i guess that is a matter of taste

you don't have to hit the highest or lowest note you can hit to have a great vocal performance

Either way, i think he did much greater things in anything pre-10,000 days

10,000 Days had some of his craziest vocals though.

Yeah Rosetta Stoned for example. But does his performance really rival things like Orestes, 3 Libras, The Outsider, Brena? Not in the slightest for me

His performances on The Pot and Wings For Marie are up there for me.

The Pot is great, i totally forgot about that for a sec. Wings for Marie/10,000 days bores me, there are too many skippable tracks on 10k days for me

Wow, Wings Pt1&2 actually just edged out Parabola as my favourite Tool song ever the other day. I don't find anything skippable on 10k other than Lipan and Viginti (fuck that track).

Crazy how perceptions can differ. I basically skip half the record, but the highlights (Vicarious, The Pot, Rosetta Stoned, Right in Two) are really amazing so it still is a 3.5 to me

I like all of the songs on 10,000 Days but to me they just don't fit together in a cohesive way. It's a great collection of songs but it just doesn't come together like the first 3 records do.

Brena has his best vocals ever imo; textbook mjk

Surprised you skip Jambi, that song is killer. But I'm not surprised it's the most divisive Tool album. There's fewer songs, and they're longer and more all-in.

Agreed with all of Ocean and artiswars comments on the last page. Glad this is growing for Sowing and Awaiz.
