agreed, Mitski had a really strong opener and then kinda lost steam. Kinda like this but way more severely

this album eased me into country music, so I can't help but adore it. I've discovered 50+ country/americana albums I've enjoyed since hearing this

I've been into country for a while now (thanks to my wife) but I haven't really advertised it around these parts. Most of it is on the poppier side of country, although I've sprinkled in your Sturgill Simpson here and your Lucero there (both of which I recommend to anyone who hasn't tried them).

country pop can really hit the spot. can't remember if I rec'd you Elise Davis - Cactus, but that's a similar album that I love from this year. it's a shame it's still sitting at 9 votes!

this will also be the first year a country album ends up in/near my top 10, but it's Brandi Carlile (which I also overwhelmingly recommend)

Brandi isn’t anything like this (and I consider her more folk/folk rock than country) but you should definitely try her out Sowing, great songwriter and incredible vocalist.

I shall check her out then, I don't take lightly a Chan/Boney joint recommendation

I don't know what Americana is but when I hear it I just think of Tom Petty or new Decemberists

americana is basically just music that takes a bunch of influence from the more traditional forms of american music, so you can have a country-americana album just as easily as a folk-americana album.
something like 'red clay roots' by laura stevenson is a great example of what americana is

sowing also mentioned lucero earlier on this page, they are another good example of what is basically a rock band with a bunch of americana influence

Americana is usually taken as a country subgenre, and that’s not wrong, it’s just not totally descriptive either. As chan says, you can have Americana that’s also mostly folky.
Calling Tom Petty Americana isn’t 100% accurate, though a lot of people do say that. His genre is Heartland rock (though there is a lot of overlap there between that and Americana, hence the confusion).
Basically Americana is an umbrella term for rootsy, largely acoustic based and slightly more traditional American music made between now and the mid-80s or so.

And all that is also confounded somewhat but the fact that there’s also the term alt-country, which, while there’s a ton of overlap between that and Americana since they developed at the same time causing many people to conflate the two terms, is also a distinct style.
