Doof I hate to break it to ya but this isn’t just a hivemind album - Kacey has had two acclaimed albums before this that were both undoubtedly country - poppy country, and less poppy than this, but country still. This sees Kacey in a more poppy direction, but it’s unfair to evaluate this as simply “Grammy bait MOR pop”. Kacey is an authentic country musician who has had plenty of success in that style. The high ratings started with prior fans and then it ended up breaking out beyond that. I for one certainly would have still rated this a 4 even if it had not broken out to a bigger audience than her past work. Sure some people are overrating a bit but I think those ratings are expressing their genuine enjoyment not a pressure to rate this high just because it’s popular.
I don’t begrudge your disliking this, I never expected you to (nor would I have even expected you to enjoy her prior stuff that was more purely country) and you can certainly criticize or explain why you dislike the music, but don’t make unfounded statements about the context or intent of the artist in creating it or of other people who are enjoying it.

This was a pleasant breeze, drifted in then drifted it. A decent sensation for a quick second.

They weren’t that at all Doof, especially considering the type of country that wins Grammys these days. They still had a cutesy sound but the lyrics especially were far more nuanced than anything you’ll find on the charts. You still probably wouldn’t enjoy them but at least take a look at the lyrics for a song like Merry Go Round. She did scale back the songwriting on this one so it doesn’t show her skills in that department.

What may sound bland to some may sound beautiful to others. That is why music is so subjective.

I can definitely see the appeal. I just wish it had more substance. As it is, it sounds all nice and pretty, but feels mostly forgettable to me.

Yes, SoccerRiot - atmosphere is the little extra that moved it to a 5 from a 4.5 for me.

i'd give velvet elvis a 3 and golden hour, slow burn, lonely weekend, and butterflies 4.5s and basically everything else a 4 but the cumulative impact of the album is stronger than the quality of the individual songs might suggest i'd say

Also, I'm not entirely sure why people are saying this isn't country. It's pop-influenced, yes, but the country is still there by quite a decent margin. I know I'm not an expert on the genre, but from the contemporary acts I've listened to, she fits in nicely. From the instrumentation (banjos, slide guitar, pedal steel guitar), to the confessional singer-songwriter lyricism, to the Wild West allusions, to the emphasis on very homely, organic folk influences, it seems just as country-based as it does pop-based

It certainly is country but it’s a decidedly less “pure” country experience than her previous work is all. Many of the songs have the feel more of pop songs than country songs, in spite (and sometime because) of their instrumentation.

I can understand that, yeah. I just wish people weren't putting such an emphasis on it, lol
