And also I think these guys' palette has always been amazingly wide for a rock band, since Boxer they've been adding flourishes with any kind of instrument they could fit in. TWFM was diverse too, but in a pretty understated, aloof kind of way. This album freshens things up quite a bit to my ears. You have the care and the grace of the last two albums but an even more detailed listening experience. And just a lot livelier. Love it

The band knows that everyone is gonna go "woah electronics in a National song" instead of assessing whether they're actually good. Adding syncopated rhythms to dad rock is considered "adventurous" and "risky."

You're right but I think they are actually good. Walk it Back is a tour-de-force- Born to Beg, Empire Line and the last two all make me melt

Thats what every rock band does when they want to "experiment" these days, add electronic elements.

anyways, this album is fairly diverse, but they have a couple too many piano ballad songs on here.

Yeah I'm kind of with Adolf here - the electronics don't necessarily feel like a natural progression of their style (though they have been hinting at it somewhat for the past couple albums and they have certainly been gradually and subtly expanding their palette).

I don't think it was supposed to be their Amnesiac or anything, but I think it does expand their sound quite a bit. Just in that subtle Nationaly way.

I feel like people don't notice the electronics in HV and even more in TWFM. This really takes them to the next level tho.

They're certainly there but they are much more subtle than they are here and for all intents and purposes were barely even there.

Maybe but compared to Alligator and Boxer I definitely noticed a significant change.

This is my AOTY out of the... *counts* five albums I've heard (up against Ulver, Flotation Toy Warning, Manchester Orchestra, and Brand New)

I'm happy with the hype 5 remaining in place, not sure what I'd actually rate this as of yet (probably somewhere in the 4-4.5 range) but I'm not ruling out the prospect of this growing to a genuine 5

the main piano riff in nobody else will be there reminds me of the one in survival of the fittest by mobb deep

Why so few 2017 albums Dylan? Not much caught your interest this year? There have been a ton of big releases.

turtleneck would be a lot better if he went all out screaming like he did on available and abel (feels like it is just waiting to be unleashed like that, but it never happens)

Matt definitely needs to come unhinged more. Like i saw them play Graceless on the Colbert Report, and on the last part where he repeats the "grace, put the flowers you find in a vase" line, he started shouting and it was better than the record version. I feel like he plays it too safe.

Even listening to their live broadcast last night he was more unhinged on some of the songs from this.

drumming in i'll still destroy you is amazing

glad they're utilizing bryan's talents more on here, was one of the things lacking on TWFM and to a lesser extent HV

Bryan's drumming will never be as great as it was on Boxer though. My God what a classic drumming album that is.

Boney I'm just super lazy when it comes to checking new music, this point last year I wasn't much farther ahead - wasn't until December that I decided to play catch-up and my number of albums heard from the year ballooned from the single digits to around 30
