Self aware pretension is still pretension and it doesn't make Tillman any more likeable. Just because he knows he's an unlikeable asshole doesn't change the fact he's still an unlikeable asshole.

Pretentious - of course. But the exact reason I disliked Tillman is the reason I'm around these days. I'm a music first guy, and by no means declare his lyrics gospel, but this album spun tracks 1-6 *break* 7-13 makes for a more (intentionally so) easily digestible listen that really does still give Papa John some cred. A bloated mess 1-13 over the course of almost a feature film, but split 'er up and maybe something more crawls out.

Mind you the end of the album's post-rock/orchestral leanings brought me to that conclusion. Album still could easily be a snoozefest lol

'magic mountain' is the only song i really like here

First two listens of this were a trudge to get through, and I loved Honeybear.

His past couple of albums have been a guilty pleasure for me. This one is good too, but too long, agreed.

Things It Would Have Been Helpful to Know and Leaving LA are both great, and I still enjoy Tillman's wit and voice. But even as a relative fanboy I have to admit this is a fucking wank fest and totally unnecessary.

Some 10-verse chorus-less diatribe
Plays as they all jump ship, "I used to like this guy
This new shit really kinda makes me wanna die"
LOL fuck this guy
