I'm curious as to the "why". Did Sumerian push them to make a record with more clean vocals? Or was it a choice they legitimately made on their own? Like, after this record, I don't see them going back to that sound again so it begs the question.

They stated that there was a lot of studio interference so it's safe to assume it was pushed on them, at least to some extent.
Honestly I think the previous album is OKAY as a standard metalcore album. It's just really shitty as a Darkest Hour album. And since I have a hard time separating the sound they went with from the sound I expect from them, I have a hard time enjoying most of that one. It does have a couple cool songs though.

I guess what I mean is that this album brings back a sense of conviction that the band has been lacking since TER. It draws me in and feels inspired, unlike the last three.

TER honestly would have been fine if they had the same caliber of producer as they did on their best albums. It's no coincidence that they used Devin Townsend, Fredrik Nordstrom, and Kurt Ballou on their best albums, and less talented folks on their more mediocre albums.
The songwriting is there on about 6/10 tracks, and the rest could have been elevated as well with the right production process.

I guess my "good music" equals "excellent music" in a way
Since I'm an album listener type of person, "good music" means an album that I enjoy listening to, back to back, without wanting to skip tracks
But it doesn't have to be a genre bending, mind boggling, best music I evar herd, type of thing
If the album is an enjoyable experience taken as a whole, and makes me want to come back, then it's good music. I think it's unnecessary be disappointed if it doesn't reach the fabled heights of some previous album. But I guess "excellent" is almost needed to make that mark

Townsend's stuff definitely fits their more melodic side better, but that being said Ballou's work on this fits them so well, probably because this is a much harsher album overall.
