Had the same decent, low-end guitar for eight years and it's been through so much and has doesn't remain in-tune for more than a few minutes; it's depressing, but I have no money for a new one right now. Feels weird not playing something I have been playing for as long as I remember. :/
You don't want to go for something too cheap, so 200-300 is a good price range. Most guitars below that range are unlikely to do you anything worthwhile in the long run. On one hand, I'm more comfortable with a guitar than I am good, but I'm nonetheless self-taught. Unless you want to learn music theory, it's doable, though: just learn the basic chords and get comfortable with the feel of it, and then go onto using guitar tablatures. Once you get comfortable you'll just be messing around, and just look at different, more advanced techniques online.
