'people still listen to rock music?'
rock is dead and we killed it
'There's 'pop' and then there's 'chart music''
also chart music is a pretty under appreciated medium, cuz theres a lot to enjoy or study out of it beyond the truly abysmal throw away stuff.

u just said motorhead and zeppelin as examples don't blame anyone else for misinterpreting it as just defending old ass pop lmao

I feel you doof, but again: It's not about what pop you (general "you", not you in particular) like, it's about how you treat the pop you don't like. Like, if I loved classic rock but dismissed the Arctic Monkeys as contrived, talentless bullshit that succeeds because of their looks (as I've seen a lot of people do), that's a lot different than saying "I dislike them intensely but understand that they mean something to some people". This isn't to delegitimize all criticism, since a lot of pop criticism can be valid, it's just to say that certain avenues of pop criticism ain't the most productive

I'd call Fleetwood Mac Pop-Rock tbh.
This is pure pop, along with Britney etc.

Sput is a place that insists on breaking every genre down into a billion sub genres and yet pop remains pop.
Pop is instantaneous disposable chart fodder.
|
| |
fleetwood mac, britney spears, and beach house all fall under the umbrella that is "pop music" but they ARE defined by different levels of quality, sub genres, and sound. Which is how you SHOULD be classifying groups. People who use a genre tag as their defining factor of criticism for an artist are just silly people.
'Sput is a place that insists on breaking every genre down into a billion sub genres and yet pop remains pop.'
yet we only have about 40 genre tags to name.

Because Pop is pretty disposable yeah.

yeah it's about people criticizing pop for inconsequential stuff, like their looks ("ugly", "you only like her cuz she's hot", etc), or when it was released ("modern music SUCKS!"), or the subjects they discuss (sex, partying, teenage stuff), as if either inherently implied the music is bad

AM don't even look that good tho, they're certainly not one direction
And they can actually play
and yeah yeah i know it was an example

genre tags and even subgenre tags are very important, the people who say otherwise are just lazy or ignorant

@Clover
I agree with you, but why do people insist on calling Metal a different genre from Rock. Surely you could take your argument and say Metallica and Foo Fighters are both under the umbrella of rock but Metallica are metal and Foo Fighters rock.

Novelty records, manufactured bands, one hit wonders, marketing ploys, TV show contestants, seasonal tunes.
All hold the same value as Kurt obviously.
|

For real though, how money obsessed do you have to be to write a song like anaconda and "booty" and then make the videos pure vanilla porn so you can get them money

or maybe it was for dumb fun? have u heard of the concept
u don't do everything as part of a calculated plot to a world-changing philosophical/artistic magnum opus, don't pretend u do. people like to have fun. of course you can regard other music as better (i have homogenic at a 5 for a reason), but that doesn't mean u have to pretend u ain't ever had fun in ur life

pop music would be much more accepted if people didn't look for some special life changing meaning in lyrics.

Who said pop music wasn't accepted, it's literally the most popular genre of music out there.

Music is life changing though.

certainly not nirvana!
"Who said pop music wasn't accepted, it's literally the most popular genre of music out there"
it's pretty obvious we're talking sputnik/music nerdom, even then it's one of the most shunned along with metal (another genre that gets plenty of undeserved hate outside of here)
|
| |
Narrow minded people (like my father is sometimes) hear the genre "metal" and immediately imagine neckbeard long hair no-lifers who chug on fucking guitars and bang on sum fucking drums because they're angry their daddy left them and have no musical knowledge whatsoever so all of their creation is mindless "noise".
That does attach to any genre tbh.

'I agree with you, but why do people insist on calling Metal a different genre from Rock. Surely you could take your argument and say Metallica and Foo Fighters are both under the umbrella of rock but Metallica are metal and Foo Fighters rock.'
I'd argue its because the evolution of the sound of both rock and metal have far evolved and branched to the point where you cant really put the two together and say theyre the same genre... if that makes sense. Metal may of started as a sound more similar to that of rock, but it has become a genre with so many different defining factors to rock in sound, theme, and design that people will refer to them as different genres for those arbitrary factors (or very needed and accurate factors). They may both be rock music, but the music has evolved to the point where its much more apt to call them 'guitar music' because theyre just too different now and days.
As for pop, many may group the sub genres and styles so closely together because many people refuse to take pop seriously to care enough about it? I dunno.
