I wonder if I can get back into this. It grew off of me HARD after I was briefly obsessed when it released. I 4.5'd it but I don't want to change it until another spin.
I think Alex's monotony and the stagnant guitar tones are what hamper re-listenability for me personally.
And I love tone of the guitars, it's just that, much like Alex, and with a few shining exceptions, they stay within a safe zone and rarely leave. Which makes the entire running time of the album (short of the transitional instrumentals) sort of a vague fever-dream of chugging without any big landmarks. It was a problem I had with their prior album, but it's just less muddily-produced here.
Maybe their next album will be what I hoped this would have been! They've clearly got the chops and potential, but just need to mature as songwriters a little bit more.

honestly I have no issue with alex's vocals

I think people talking about his vocals are just nitpicking. Lets not sit here and pretend that most DM vocalists have a ton of range in their style. Pretty much just stick to the one thing right?

I don't think it's nitpicking -- vocals are a *huge* part of any non-instrumental group. He's perfectly adequate, but just doesn't show a lot of range in these recordings.
Every single other band I listen to throws in some variety. Spoken word, clean, shouts, screaming, growling.... Alex breaks from the norm exactly once, leaving us with 99% of the same lower-pitched growls. Those few seconds in The Void Alone (?) where he breaks into those throat-shredding high-pitched screams....heavenly. He's capable of it, and seems to know that it can be harnessed for controlled release, but it only shows up once!
But man I'm getting into this record again. Every time I fall out of love with it, I give it a break, come back, and fall in love again.

that segment on the void alone you're talking about is probably my favorite on the album
gives me goosebumps

I agree with you Nomos, but, at least up until Dreamless, Fallujah was spacey but still primarily a death metal influenced band, right? What he was doing was perfectly standard for death metal.
I agree with you about TVA's high shrieks 100% too. Its so unexpected if you've been following them, and part of what makes it so powerful.
I will say, though, that he adds a lot of high shrieks live and definitely knows how to utilize it to the benefit of the moment. I think he's the part of the band with the most room to grow, both in vocals and his electronics which are clearly capable, but not quite integrated fully with the band. Dreamless is wonderful, but definitely feels like a band in the midst of truly finding themselves. The best tracks (Scar Queen, The Void Alone and so on) are just a hint at what could be coming next.

Prodigal came up on random today in the car and I loved it so hard.

Not sure why you all think this album is that good. I guess I'm just not about the atmosphere all that much. I think Harvest Wombs > Flesh Prevails > this.

It's weird. The individual songs on this are awesome, every time one comes on in shuffle I'm like "I should listen to this album again", but when I do it's just too much of the same. The drums are always awesome though.

I get excited about harvest wombs when a song comes up on random, but get bored so fast when trying to give it a full listen. CH is still king though.

yeah thats because 50 mins of relentless techy deathy stuff without any of the shit that makes TFP and Dreamless cool is kinda boring
