I haven't heard any of this guy's albums (not even PT or any of his other projects), but I wanna' check this one, how does this work as a stand alone album in Steven's discography?

Although I agree Grace doesn't stand up as a whole as much as this, The Raven and Insurgentes, I must say it definitely has some of his solo career's most beautiful songs, and doesn't worship 70s prog that often. I'd say it definitely deserves a spin, Tuna, as it appears you haven't heard it yet; it actually contains some songs reminiscent of this album.
@Asdfp277: I think this album or his second solo outing Grace for Drowning could both make for a great introduction to his whole body of work, but some Porcupine Tree albums such as Deadwing or In Absentia could work very well too, if you're more of a metal enthusiast.

grace for drowning is pretty lame tbh
best thing he's ever done

Grace stands up on its own pretty well. And Insurgentes is a great album, it has much more character than this or Raven.

Raven has almost no lasting quality. I might jam a song or two occasionally, but the album as a whole won't ever see a full spin again on my devices. Grace, on the other hand, I jammed at least ten times last month. It even has some great lyrics, which sw doesn't do often

If it is well done, like this, why wouldn't anyone like it? At this point everything is derivative of everything, and SW isn't known for pushing the envelope but for taking his influences and writing awesome songs. He's done that since the early days with PT and it's the same now.
I think the most innovative Steven did was his work with No-Man. Such an underrated band yet such beautiful, organic and timeless music with little resemblance of what was happening at the time musically. Don't believe me? Search for "Angel Gets Caught in the Beauty Trap".

"Storm Corrosion is the most creative/interesting thing Wilson's been involved with"
Well that's a little poor comment coming from someone who has Ian Anderson as his avatar. It's a good effort, yes, but way too derivative from the 70's weird folk scene. Nowhere near as good as bands like Comus or Exuma. No-Man took the legacy of Talk Talk and expanded upon it creating a perfect balance between accesibility, creativeness and emotion. Also, it shouts Wilson everywhere, a sound of it's own. It reaches too many highs as for not recognize it.

I didn't say Storm Corrosion was innovative. But actually it kinda was by Wilson's standards.
It's definitely one of the most creative things he's done, there's no denying that.

It's definitely one of the most creative things he's done[2]
it divides many of his fans, which is something his other albums don't really do
