@Wizard

I have had, not a particularly big following, but a consistent following, although that might be because I was brought to some level of prominence on Rotten Tomatoes by my being voted a "Super Reviewer". I haven't gotten much feedback, but whenever I did, it was fairly positive, from grounded, smart people who didn't punctuate their intellectualism with lazy web-grammar and lowbrow humor. Is it a possibility that people with a mental capacity to embrace the post-hardcore, or extreme metal, or hip-hop, or simplified avant-garde scenes, flavored up with a half-witted musical sophistication that graces its listeners with nothing more than pretense, don't have the focus to read reviews of slightly extended flow and vivid description? I've had the intelligent praise my wit and detail, and had grounded call my work engaging, to an extent that I don't even subscribe to, so it stands to reason that the people in-between - who don't have much of an attention span, but are aware enough about what I'm talking about to carry an air of arrogance, and for my descriptions to not resonate all that much - can't get comfortable with something that's simultaneously "advanced" (According to others, not me) and refreshing.

My material runs on, but by no means "insanely", and if I deliver my point thoroughly, without people - especially myself, a hyper-analytical reader to focuses a little too ponderously on each word - forgetting what I'm talking about or where I'm going, then just how much difference does a few extra periods make? I will get carried away from time to time, sure, and that's something I'll have to work on in the future, but I and others take pride in my breaking boundaries and not conforming too deeply to a crowd or basic formula for writing, something that's killing the critical industry to people who are tired of the formula you keep trying to get me on. I will improve my writing style as to make it more accessible, but it's comical that it has never occurred to anyone how ironic it is that someone walks in with something fresh and audacious, and people who typically welcome that in 10-20-minute-long stretches of the same sound respond with boasting that he needs to conform, and is being "closed-minded" for not doing so?

Sorry if I'm a sounding like a "troll", but I get mad at ignorance, too, kids, and I've tried for too long to be polite to people who insult me and my artform to their very core, and make radical assumptions about who I am, and about how smart I am. I'm sure that everyone here is smart, but something has corrupted you all, and I'm not going to be next. I'll take criticism, but not this nonsense, and I'm bailing out of a community like this.

you should review the new Swans album, or some other stupidly long album. Your lengthy style might work as a statement toward the album(s)'s similarly lengthy, often overly-complicated styles. :3

And Paysage D'Hiver. Wall of noise? WALL OF TEXT.

Using Rotten Tomatoes as your one (and only?) reference does not lend credibility to you as a writer, Mr. Super Reviewer. You were likely voted as such by fuckwits that assume length and verbiage automatically equal worth. Your style is meandering, pretentious, pseudo-artistic, labyrinthine bullshit. If I hadn't already listened to this album, your review would not have convinced me to do so.

But as a somewhat frequent lurker here: This thread has been entertaining. Keep doing what you're doing.

Another run on sentence. And I'm not being humorous or being a jerk about it either. It's constructive criticism and my attention span has nothing to do with the judgement of your lengthy pieces of pseudo-intellectual rants.

CamWJohnson, cut your loses and run and come back as a new user. I'm doing you a favour.

And those grounded, smart people at rotten tomatoes.....who and where do they exist?

Bro. You don't convey "vivid description." Some of your sentences work, in a grammatically correct sense. However, they're dragged out SO grandiosely that they lose their poignancy. Most of the ones I've read have had ill-placed or excessive usage of commas.

The guys around these parts are phenomenal writers. Have you read some of these reviews? Sure, some here suck... but the majority of reviews on Sput are well-thought out and actually helpful.

They're concise, accurate, honest, critical, and often times quite creative or witty.

Part dos!

You can't expect to come on a website that allows for public forum type review styles and believe that your "superior" literary skills will trump anyone else's criticism of your writing style. Generally I'm forgiving of those who may not have written the best reviews. However, you come across as arrogant- not because you type in an over zealously drawn-out fashion that I "can't comprehend." You come across as arrogant because you are.

I don't care if you're a "Super Reviewer" on Rotten Tomatoes. This isn't Rotten Tomatoes.

In fact, as far as I'm concerned, satellites and vegetables have nothing in common.

If you were open to critique regarding your writing style, then that'd be cool... but instead you have a rebuttal for anyone who's not fond of it, claiming that they just don't understand it and that it's a personal preference kind of deal. If this many people are complaining about it, believe me, it's because you wrote a poor review.

I mean, I got a 100% in the English/Grammatical/Writing sections of the SAT (if those scam exams can be seen as any form of generalized test), I'm published, and have writing throughout my family history. I recently took home multiple awards in an art show, and my work is currently on display in a local gallery. Some obscure little Dutch radio show/podcast somehow stumbled upon my music and played it on their show... Yet, if someone came up to me and was like," Bro, your writing sucks." Or," Your photography is crap my man." Or perhaps," Your music is like listening to a thousand cats have sex." I'd ask them how to improve, take it to heart and call it good. Even if I didn't change my style, at least I would have listened to their input, instead of making baseless claims that they don't have the correct attention span to appreciate my work just because I don't like to hear negativity about something I've done.

So yeah man, just take criticism to heart. Even if Sput isn't the most posh place at times, it's a good forum for improvement upon your writing skills. You can choose to actually listen to criticism and work with it, or ignore it... but don't be so calloused about your response to negative criticisms.

Not everyone will like your style, and that's okay... but that doesn't make them ignorant, close-minded, or attention deficit.

@North0House2

I forgot to emphasize that my rant was not directed at those who came off as level-headed in their criticism, and weren't abusive or ignorant. I respect criticism, and I'm sorry if people mistook my not getting around to the comments as an ignorance of the comments. I assure you that I am much more self-conscience than arrogant, and was just getting overly defensive because for every person who was fair and not all that judgmental in their criticism, there were people sounding like the idiots I doubt they are, and assaulting a defining aspect in a life that I have limited pride in beyond writing (Sorry if that was a run-on sentence). The human mind is an extremely complicated entity, and whether I overanalyzed or underanalyzed, I jumped the gun.

Sigh. Once more, I am sorry. I keep going over-the-top, because I don't really know how to talk to these people, and whether it be because they're above me, or more confident, or from different backgrounds, or whatever, I don't know how to rebuttal, or if I even should. I have taken criticism to heart, and gotten harsh criticism in my head, and now almost five years of hard work is starting creep at my back. I've compared recent album reviews and some more inspired reviews, and I have been slacking off a bit lately, certainly not to where my reviews are "terrible", but just as certainly to where they lack in inspiration and coherency. What it also comes down to is a lack of experience with this style, because over the years, I have tightened up on my film reviews, and have just now gotten around to these album reviews whose particular style I am trying to get ahold of. My style isn't great, but it is unique, and I'm proud of that, and will try to keep it as fresh and comfortable as I can.

I'll have an audience, critics, and attackers, and I thank this website for preparing me for that, because it's better that I get a taste of the hard world now, as an amateur, before I try my luck in the professional world and get shot down. So, to my fans, the critics, and those ignorant jerks who were just being cruel for the sake of being cruel, I thank you. Whether or not I come back (The person who inspired me to join this site is helping me in finding a less overly public site where I can develop my skills a little more privately), I'll try to do better, but honestly, maybe pro music criticism isn't for me.

There's so much emotion wrapped up in music, and the anatomy of a film is a more universally accessible beast. Just because I'm a decent film critic (I don't think I'm great, by the ways; too many reviews feel calculated and kind of run together, but I and my fair deal of readers think that they're serviceably engaging) doesn't mean that I'd make all that great of a music critic.
