chrononautilus absolutely blew my mind, what a fucking beast of a track. stupendous
if the entire album maintains a similar level, I think it might be 4.0+ average material

Do I want to listen to the singles or wait like the goodest boi. Dilemma.

if this was a 2.5 for you, then judging by these two singles you might even give the new one a 3

Singles are straight fire. Agreed that Scorched Quadrant works better when paired with Chrononautilus. Per's still got it thank god, that solo in the middle of Scorched Quadrant is gorgeous. Such an undervalued solist but absolutely one of my favorites.

Benjamin Ellis apparently plays one of the solos in scorched quadrant. I absolutely can't tell him from Per, since he's an emulator of his - in fact I thought the solo in Chrononautilus was his, but turns out it was Per's after all

Tastefull stuff all around, loved the amount of amazing solo's on phase 1 so hearing multiple great solo's in these singles gives me a lot of hope for some new nuggets

I have seen nothing but praise for the singles thus far. How good do these singles go /"The Illusionist"

I don't think it's THAT different from what they've done before, but I've been an enthousiast of these guys since Holographic Universe came out in 2008. I do think these might be their best singles since then, but your opinion might differ ofc.

"The Illusionist" is my personal ceiling for these guys and I'm yet to be convinced otherwise.

The singles are not comparable to "the illusionist". Up until the 5th album, the first track on the album was always the "radio track", the easy listening hit with a catchy chorus. They've stopped doing that with Neohumanity, and the trend continues here. Guess scorched quadrant is a more traditionally formulaic song, but chrononautilus packs so much different stuff into its 5 min runtime it's unreal, completely different type of song form those earlier hit ones, so it's hard to compare it to The Illusionist. I think "calculate the apocalypse" would be a fairer comparison to chrononautilus tbh, but this is more varied and chaotic still

Just when you think you've heard all the tricks Chorononautilus has up it's sleeve, they hit you with the most chaotic and brutal part and another call back to the last song from phase 1. I thought it was just the verses, but they bring back that atmospheric melody in tremolo picking form, and it sounds so natural. Great songwriting

ayy if these are the singles we've heard, I wonder how heavy the rest of the album will end up being

Album kicks off with the most Queensryche-esque riff ever

That feel when you learn the new album was mostly all written in 2016 and mostly all recorded by 2017.. There are even some riffs on there from 1999. Guitar solos by Ben Ellis were added in 2020, and some other refinements. It was also postponed another year to get the artwork sorted out...
Per is imminently going in to write Phase 3. Given that how fast the band used to write and release music, and Per no longer playing with Meshuggah, maybe it won't be so long before the trilogy is completed.
Can't wait for June 9th!
