^Yeah, some of these songs go back at least seven years and it is true that Richard said he has some more "experimental" stuff that just needs to be arranged into an album. However, this is still very much the real deal considering the immense level of detail that went into creating Syro. It's true it didn't violate the space-time continuum like a lot of people may have expected it would, but I still think it brought a lot to the table and showed us just how refined his technique is now. Plus the synths are next-level.
Also, relating to Relinquished's post some guy over at watmm announced that there is something else on the horizon as we speak, though apparently it isn't new music. I'm wondering if he may be releasing some other older material soon.

there was a guy who posted on 4chan earlier in the year that he had an inside with warp and two aphex releases were slated, the first of which would be out in september
so hes batting 1 for 1 at this point. maybe it wasnt just a shitpost.

It'll be the opposite to this i.e total gubbins so those who feel let down by this will undoubtedly think it's amazing.

Nice find. He was right about this too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_Nan3ssuLc

Yeah, I do believe there is greater stuff to come out from him. I think Syro is excellent as it is but it's not Aphex at his peak in my opinion.

Vordhosbn and Mt. Saint Michel Mix + St. Michaels Mount alone pretty much beat this album.

While I can only speak for myself, I definitely think you're right to reserve judgement and give it a couple more listens. In my experience this album is a grower. My first couple listens were pleasant but also very superficial. Those little things that initially seemed to pop out of nowhere (a torqued note here, a fleeting melody there) all began to reveal themselves as part of the whole with repeated listens. When it finally clicked for me it was like magic.
Then again, if you're not really intrigued by it at all or just find it boring from the jump you probably just don't like it. No need to waste your time listening to boring music. This is coming from the weirdo who thinks SAW 85-92 is the worst album in the Aphex Twin discography.

While this is probably just a case of that new album smell settling in, my love for this album dwindled the more I listened to it. I still love it, but all the little intricacies that popped up after a more thorough examination didn't really do anything for me. Syro is a great record, but it's also a very "safe" record for Aphex. How RA gave it a 5/5 is beyond me, and it wasn't even Andrew Ryce who reviewed it

SAW 85-92 is a revolutionary record, sounds unlike anything made before it.

SAW 85-92 is a revolutionary record, sounds unlike anything made before it.
As was I Care Because You Do, The Richard D. James album, SAW II, etc. I just think SAW 85-92 sounds rudimentary and it doesn't have much replay value. Revolutionary as it may be it sounds inferior when compared to his later work.

I don't see how this album is "playing it safe" to RDJ's standards. This is the kind of album I would expect from an artist that hasn't released a LP in 13 years.

Because he's not exactly doing something wildly different to his stuff normally and it's a crowd pleaser. How is it not playing it safe?

At least he's not making music that sounds different solely for the reason of trying to sound different all the time. Those are some of the worst artists ever. As with all his albums Syro has a distinct sound and it demonstrates just how refined he is at this point. We all know he has more of the experimental, challenging and at times abrasive stuff in the chamber alongside the more ambient, elegant and simplistic stuff. I wouldn't say RDJ is the type of guy to ever really play it safe however. He essentially put his bread and butter on ice for 13 years and admittedly released a bunch of shit under different aliases, stopped touring and started DJing random small clubs, etc. From handing last-minute "remixes" to artists which can contain 0% of their source material, regularly trolling people and the press, spinning sand paper and throwing microphones in blenders and whatever the shit else at raves it should be pretty obvious by now that Richard doesn't really give a fuck about the opinions of his fans, his critics or anyone else. The only thing he's really consistently shown in interest in over the years is making music. Syro is just that, more music. And judging by the labor that went into this work he still appears to be forging ahead.

While this isn't really a radical departure from afx's normal, he does enough interesting things that it's a worthwhile addition to his discog
