Cathartic is the right word. This album was the perfect successor to A4.

It could be a 5 later, Clover. Late 90's Anathema is gold.

I only ever heard We're Here Because We're Here and it was pretty good but didn't blow my mind. Their older stuff is much better?

this band have changed genre about 6 times

this is after their doom metal phase, 'judgement' still has gothic touches but is Anathema at their most Floyd.

They'd then go their most alt/Radiohead on 'a fine day to exit'

Then 'A Natural Disaster was something else again - a bridge between that style and maybe harked back to this a bit more too.

Then they went a bit happy vibes 'new age' with some post-rock in there and strangely I think WHBWH and the albums that followed work really well too

Odd band, incredible live

It's not a question of 'better', they've just changed a lot, as Doof mentioned. One may or may not like the old stuff more.

Gotta respect a band that isn't content with releasing the same stuff over and over again, even if not every direction they take is to your liking.

Ed this band are the poster boys for that philosophy

Went to their gig at Shepherd's Bush last year that was split in three parts - three ages of the band

First set current line-up, second set this era with key songwriter Duncan Patterson back on bass, and the third was classic - the original doom metal vocalist was given his day in the sun and ended up singing to a 20 times bigger crowd than he ever had before. Was great, he really got on his soapbox and relished it you could tell.

Saw recordings from that tour. Awesome idea and they all seemed to enjoy it.

Ed sometimes I refer to certain Anathema songs as the Coldplay it's ok to like ; )

As a start maybe check the following songs: Are You There?, Electricity, Barriers, Temporary Peace, Dreaming Light, Universal and maybe One Last Goodbye off this album

You might think they're unbearably cheesy I don't know

Mate, I really liked "Anathema" on Distant Satellites, so I'll think I'm fine on the cheese front. Will give those songs a spin.

The entire album of acoustic based re-workings 'Hindsight' is a really great entry point too - their most consistent release

They definitely have lots of variety in their discography. This is their best though.

Someday maybe, I'm going through a 160+ back log right now in ABC order and this album happened to be at the top.
