the birth and death of the pillars of creation is really disheartening because none of the potential that track had in its foundations were built upon at all
it starts going somewhere and then just ends

astral dialogue is awesome. wish they'd write more songs like that
i've only heard 2 songs from this and dug em both so i guess i need to check this, despite being wary at first

The Astral Dialogue - Dark Matter Gods - Celestial Effigy is a really good trio, but the rest of the album drops off a bit in quality. That section is one of my favorites in any Agalloch album though.

wtf are you on about noctus, that song is brilliant, one of their best even. the first 3-minute build is sublime and the rest is just fine. songs don't need to climax to be good

Album still sucks.

songs don't need to climax to be good
I agree with this, but they forced it to peak with that ridiculous last few minutes. They spent 8
minutes building an atmosphere and then ruin it all by dropping a few vocal lines that segue into the
most ridiculously amateurish clean guitar ever.

i didn't want a climax. i wanted the song to go somewhere without meandering and leading to a terrible clean guitar riff to finish off what could have been a great song.

Yeah that clean guitar section is one of the weakest moments in Agalloch's entire discography that I remember. At least from their full lengths, not counting anything from EPs or singles.

that along with many moments in plateau of the ages (that section at about 4:45 just flat out sucks, as do the last few minutes), the last two interludes, the vocals and lyrics in celestial effigy and dark matter gods...
ugh

Dark Matter Gods grew on me pretty well, it might be my 2nd favorite track on this now. Also have to disagree about the last few minutes of Plateau, that's one of my favorite parts on the whole album.

plateau wants to be as good as the hawthorne passage but fails miserably

I've never heard an instrumental as good as The Hawthorne Passage, that part with the sample of the cars going over the bridge and the entire second half of that song is incredible.

noctus: i can't believe you think their last album is one of the greatest things ever and this is one
of the worst things ever.
different strokes! which is fine. i get the gripes about the first song, especially what kyle said,
but it works for me.

not one of the worst things ever but very underwhelming, there's a lot worse than this

The Birth and Death is epic...I think it sets the tone for the rest brilliantly and builds suspense rather than meanders. The outro isn't amazing though. Plateau of the Ages, however, is disappointing, although it has a few cool moments (and the outro is UGH)

I still haven't given it a proper listen yet, I never thought the day would come when I would put off a new Agalloch album but alas, it is here.

I still haven't figured out why they didn't have ANY California dates on their tour..
