Annoying? Really? It's the first time I listen to such statement. Anyway. What I like in DYU was that the band had a more prog-ish approach on their music. They let themselves loose, whereas on this one, they were more restrained. But both albums are excellent. I'd say a top 3 Epica list would be somewhat like this:
1. The Divine Conspiracy (mostly for sentimental reasons, even if I know it's not their best)
2. Design Your Universe
3. The Quantum Enigma

DYU isn't so much prog for me, it's more or less symphonic death metal. I honestly thought a lot of the symphonic elements were just WAY too much and needed to be dialed down a bit. Again, it's solid but I could've cared less about it.
I found this to be WAY better than DYU by a long shot.

Meh, there are songs on both albums that I don't like that much. Kingdom of Heaven and Design Your Universe were more prog than symphonic at many parts and I really liked that..They had prog moments on previous tracks (see: Fools of Damnation) but never on this level. Requiem... is an album that could have been, if only for the fillers.

Requiem was just bland as fuck. I'm kinda wondering why I gave it a 3.

Well it wasn't that bland but it's a 3.25. T/t and Serenade of Self-Destruction, as well as that insane solo on Infernal Warfare, along with some other moments would totally justify a 3.

@ Mythodea: 'Serenade of Self-Destruction' is tear-jerkingly poignant and profound.
Btw, check out the 'Victims of Contingency' music video.

I want to believe you say it with a positive manner.
I saw the video clip. Honestly, I can't find any Epica video clip that I liked.

Very positive manner. Simone's voice in SoS-D reaches an emotional catharsis that's beautiful as all hell.
What's your favorite song on 'The Quantum Enigma', now that it's been out for over six months and your opinion has settled?

Well, not a favourite particularly. I'd say the t/t is beyond words. I like the two orchestral tracks and I also like Victims..., Second Stone, Chemical Insomnia and Reverence. It's a great album, though I need some time to appreciate as a classic Epica album.

*Nods* Good choices.
A special shout-out goes to 'Dreamscape' and 'In All Conscience'. I feel those two are a tad underappreciated.

I think 3.8 is the best average for this. This is damn good Power/Symphonic Metal that's above many album's you'll here in the genre.
